191 people, a bank, a post office, a library, a church, a hospital, and 35 degrees below zero in winter is part of what life is like 1.500 kilometers from Punta Arenas, in Antarctica.
Villa Las Estrellas is the name of one of the Chilean settlements, located at the President Eduardo Frei base on Rey Jorge Island, and where mainly Chilean Air Force soldiers and Chilean Antarctic Institute professionals live with their families, who from today will be able to benefit from the state-of-the-art network.
The unprecedented connectivity is a key milestone in Entel's deployment in this area, which previously had only 2G connection. “Connecting remote or isolated locations in our country has been in Entel's DNA since its creation 60 years ago. Our purpose is to bring the infinite possibilities that technology offers closer to all Chileans and we are fulfilling it. Bringing 5G to Antarctica was a huge challenge, especially in technical terms, and we are very proud to be able to say that we were pioneers in the world in delivering a 5G public network for our customers, in these times when connectivity and communication contribute tremendously to the quality of life of people, especially in such geographically isolated places. We hope that this major milestone will allow significant improvements in the connectivity of the white continent and an important support for the community that works in this area and for the scientific activity that has a large presence in Antarctica", said Antonio Büchi, CEO of the company.
This important deployment is a key step in the data and telephony services provided by Entel on the white continent since 1997 and 2G mobile telephony since 2005. This will benefit the 191 residents of Villa Las Estrellas in Antarctica, as well as the visitors who travel every year to this end of the planet.
The 5G will bring a significant advance for the daily life in this southern area, from the operations and management of logistics, transportation, communications, health and basic services, to advances for the scientific community that resides permanently or temporarily in the Chilean Antarctic.
This milestone is part of Entel’s commitment to deliver the best technology available in the territory, where 315 communes from Putre to Antarctica, including Rapa Nui, already have 5G connectivity.
To give the official go-ahead, a video call was made with the Ministers of the Interior and Defense, Carolina Tohá and Maya Fernández respectively, who from La Moneda Palace had the first conversation with the white continent through 5G with the Minister of Transport and Telecommunications, Juan Carlos Muñoz; the Undersecretary of the Armed Forces, Galo Eidelstein; the CEO of Entel, Antonio Büchi, and other guests.
Minister Muñoz said that “all those Chilean men and women who are in these remote places marking the presence of the country, allow us to feel the same identity throughout the territory. The importance of the State being here, serving them, providing this type of support for these people, they will be able to have much better connectivity for their daily work and for research, and also so that these people can have a better link with their families, with their friends on the continent. The inhabitants of Villa la Estrellas told us how different it is for them now to be able to have a videoconference, to be able to do their homework with their children who are on the continent and thus maintain a much closer link. We are very satisfied with what we are celebrating today and it is accompanied by the arrival of digital television, which also allows us to have much better quality television, with greater diversity of channels”.
Meanwhile, for Undersecretary Araya, “today we celebrate that our territory, from end to end, is connected with 5G. The deployment of this technology brings Chileans in Antarctica closer to their families and friends, and once again positions Chile as a leader in the deployment of telecommunications technologies”.
The coverage on the white continent also included a modernization with 3G and 4G technology, which allows a better experience and capacity at the base, and required an investment of around USD $345 thousand. “Today Antarctica has a robust connection, just like someone in Santiago. In fact, in these few weeks of testing, the antenna traffics 28% of that of an average network antenna. It is a public network, so tourists and visitors who have an Entel chip and a compatible telephone will be able to connect to the most modern network in these latitudes”, said Büchi. He also mentioned that “it is important to bear in mind that the navigation or network experience is not the same as on the continent, since Antarctica's connection to the Internet is via satellite, which, although it is an advanced type of satellite technology, is of a much lower capacity than fiber optics”.
