The Entel Marathon of Santiago (eMDS, by its Spanish acronym) achieved the “Bronze Category” for this year’s edition. This recognition, given by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), places the eMDS at the same level as marathons such as those of Milan, Barcelona and Edinburgh, among others.
This classification - which also includes silver and gold - means that the eMDS meets a series of requirements that accredit it as a top-level race. Among these are, for example, the best historic time in the men’s and women’s categories in the 42K, the distance of the race, the level of prize money, the number of elite participants, and the organization in terms of health and safety.
The president of the Corporación Marathon of Santiago, Fernando Jamarne, commented: “We are very happy because the Entel Marathon of Santiago is and will continue to be an international level competition. This year we will have 30 thousand registered participants; Érika Olivera, the greatest athlete of our times, will say goodbye in it, and the 42-kilometer circuit will be marked by the international Blue Line. This endorsement and recognition from the IAAF crowns the work we have been doing for eleven years”.
In this way, the Entel Marathon of Santiago will allow elite athletes to qualify for the World Athletics Championships to be held in August this year in London. It will also continue to belong to the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races, which will allow several runners to qualify for major world marathons such as Tokyo and Chicago, among others.
