Due to the gradual switch-off of 2G technology by mid 2024:

People over 70 years of age, people living in rural areas without delivery and those affected by last summer’s fires will be the first to benefit from the free replacement of devices in the municipalities of Arauco, Tomé and Nacimiento.

As communicated a couple of weeks ago, Entel announced the switch-off of its 2G technology from the second half of 2024. Although there is still a year to go, in order to facilitate the technological replacement, the company will deploy a support plan for the replacement of those mobile devices that are only compatible with 2G, to a prioritized group in the Biobío Region.

This plan considers Entel customers (prepaid and subscription) over 70 years old, those customers who live in rural areas without access to delivery service and those who were affected by last February’s forest fires.

In the first pilot, which begins today in the Biobío region, an information, replacement and modernization campaign will be carried out for mobile devices that only use 2G.

“In our nearly 60-year history, we have worked to offer Chileans the most robust mobile network in the country, regardless of whether it is a large city, a rural location or even remote places like Easter Island. And over time, our network has evolved along with the different mobile technologies, to ensure our customers a first-class connectivity and navigation experience. It is in this process of evolution that we will be switching off 2G technology, and we have arranged a proactive territorial deployment where we will be informing customers to facilitate this transformation with the least possible impact”, said Entel’s Director of Territory and Stakeholders, Patricia Muñoz.

This support plan will be developed from today in the communes of Arauco, Nacimiento and Tomé, in the town halls of each commune:

  • Arauco: Monday 7 from 10.00-13.00 hrs and from 15.00 to 18.00 hrs.

  • Nacimiento: Tuesday 8th from 10.00-13.00 hrs and from 15.00 to 18.00 hrs. and Wednesday 9th from 15.00 to 17.00 hrs.

  • Tomé: Thursday 10 from 10.00-13.00 hrs. and from 15.00 to 18.00 hrs. and Friday 11 from 10.00 to 15.00 hrs.

The second-generation technology allows calls between cell phones and text messaging services, and started to work exactly 25 years ago. Other devices such as GPS, 2G electric gates, 2G cameras and companies using M2M connections can also be connected.

However, the use of this technology concentrates less than 1% of the mobile connections made in Entel’s networks.

The 2G switch-off is a global trend, which allows for a more efficient and effective use of the spectrum (radioelectric space that companies such as Entel require to provide services), to go deeper into technologies such as 4G and 5G, and deliver better voice services and mobile internet connection.

Although this technological advance is scheduled to begin in the second half of 2024, it will be a progressive process and will only be applied in those areas that also have more modern mobile technologies. At the moment, there are about 100 locations that only have 2G technology (none of these in the region), where the switch-off will not take place until a more modern mobile technology is available.

It was also informed that the telecommunications and technology company will stop marketing new services on 2G technology as of August

Sustainable growth

Renewing the technological infrastructure is essential to comply with the Chile 2035 Digital Strategy and achieve our country’s goal of Carbon Neutrality by 2050. Switching off 2G is also environmentally sustainable. Older technologies are less efficient due to their high energy consumption, so upgrading networks will be an important contribution to reducing the carbon footprint.

In turn, the old terminals and mobile devices that are exchanged will be part of Entel’s recycling programs. To do so, they must be deposited in the company’s mailboxes set up for this purpose in the city hall or in the nearest Entel store.

More relevant information about 2G technology replacement is available at entel.cl/2g. Also, it can be found in the call center, by dialing 103 from Entel cell phone or 600 3600 103.
