Gradual switch off of 2G technology will begin in mid 2024:

This support plan considers a prioritized group of Entel customers living in the communities of Cochrane and Chile Chico. It is expected to benefit around 300 people with the replacement of devices at no cost.

Entel keeps moving forward in the process of digital transformation and gradual shutdown of its 2G technology. As a first step, in 2023, it carried out successful experiences in the regions of Biobío, Aysén, Coquimbo and Atacama, supporting the replacement of mobile devices that are only compatible with this technology. Now it will be the turn of a prioritized group of customers in two other communities in the Aysén Region: Cochrane, on February 6, and Chile Chico, on February 8.

According to the information provided by the technology and telecommunications company, the technology switch-off itself is scheduled to begin gradually in the second half of 2024, but it has already replaced more than 5 thousand cell phones free of charge with devices compatible with 3G and 4G technologies.

Now, it is expected to benefit around 300 customers in Cochrane and Chile Chico, and then continue in six communities of the Los Lagos Region.

Entel customers (prepaid and subscription) over 70 years of age and living in rural areas without access to delivery service, as is the case of the mentioned communes, are eligible for this devices replacement plan. In addition, a local information campaign will be carried out to clearly explain to people the benefits of the replacement and the steps to follow.

“In our 60-year history we have worked to offer Chileans the most robust mobile technology in the country, regardless of whether it is a large city, a rural locality or even remote places such as Rapa Nui. And over time, our network has evolved along with the different mobile technologies to ensure our customers a first-class connectivity and navigation experience. In this process of evolution, this year we will begin the gradual shutdown of 2G technology, and the first step is to ensure that all Entel customers have a cell phone that is compatible with more modern technologies. To this end, we have arranged a proactive territorial roll-out, where we will be informing customers to facilitate this transformation with the least possible impact”, said Entel’s Director of Public Affairs, Claudio Anabalón.

This support plan will be developed starting today in the communities of Cochrane and Chile Chico:

  • Cochrane: Tuesday, February 6, 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Municipality of Cochrane, located at 398 Esmeralda Street.

  • Chile Chico: Thursday, February 8, 9:00 am to 3:30 pm at the Municipality of Chile Chico, located at 333 Bernardo O’Higgins Street.

Global trend

Second generation mobile technology, which began operating 25 years ago, has allowed for years the making of calls between cell phones and text messaging services. It also makes it possible to connect other devices such as GPS, 2G electric gates, 2G cameras and companies using M2M connections.

However, the use of this technology accounts for less than 1% of the mobile connections made in Entel’s networks.

The shutdown of this technology is a global trend, which allows a more efficient and effective use of the spectrum (radioelectric space that companies such as Entel require to provide services), to go deeper into technologies such as 4G and 5G, and deliver better voice services and mobile internet connection.

Although this technological advance is scheduled to begin in the second half of 2024, it will be a progressive process and will only be applied in those areas that also have more modern mobile technologies. For now, there are about 100 locations that only have 2G technology, where the switch-off will not take place until a superior mobile technology is available.

It was also reported that the technology and telecommunications company stopped marketing new services on 2G technology in August 2023.

Sustainable evolution

Renewing the technological infrastructure is essential to comply with the Chile 2035 Digital Strategy and achieve our country’s target of Carbon Neutrality by 2050. The 2G switch-off is also environmentally sustainable, as older technologies are less efficient due to their high energy consumption. In this sense, the technology upgrade will be an important contribution to the reduction of the carbon footprint.

In turn, the old handsets and mobile devices that are exchanged will be part of Entel’s recycling programs. To do so, they must be deposited in the company’s mailboxes set up for this purpose in the municipality or in the nearest Entel store.

More relevant information about the 2G technology shutdown is available at entel.cl/2g. Telephone attention can also be obtained by dialing 103 from an Entel cellular phone or 600 3600 103.
