Pájaro Carpintero (Woodpecker), Caracoles (Snails), Gallo Chileno (Chilean Rooster), Llama Andina (Andean Flame) and Insectario (Insectarium) are the five urban interventions that will give life to the sixth edition of the urban art festival Hecho en Casa Entel and will turn the city into a large garden. The free event, which will feature four international artists and the winner of the Ideas Torre Entel contest, will run from Thursday, October 25 to Sunday, November 4.
One of the novelties this year is that for the first time all the works represent animals found in Chile. In addition, most of them will be made with recycled materials. In this edition of the festival, the large-scale interventions will be concentrated in the area of the Entel Tower, in downtown Santiago, with the intention of making it easier for the public to follow the circuit in which the works will be located. Last year, more than 5 million people visited the installations of this festival, the largest urban art festival in Latin America, reaching a historic record. It is expected that in 2018 the number will continue to increase.
The only work by a national artist is Pájaro Carpintero, by advertising student Mauricio García, winner in September of the Ideas Torre Entel contest, which for the first time was open to the public and received more than 800 proposals. In the middle of a forest of buildings, the bird will perch on the Entel Tower.
From October 25 to 30, 12 colorful snails made of recycled plastic will sunbathe in Santiago. The Italian collective Cracking Art will be in charge of the work, which has toured countries such as South Korea, France, Australia and the United States. On October 31, the snails will move to the Vergara pier in Viña del Mar, where they will surprise the Valparaíso Region with a night show, which will last until November 4.
Meanwhile, an eight-meter-high multicolored rooster by the Australians Amigo & Amigo will announce a new dawn in the capital’s landscape. Gallo Chileno was built with feathers made of reusable material and will come to life at night thanks to hundreds of lights that will light up its body from the inside.
During the festival -and a few steps away from the previous work- it will be possible to see how the French artist Mantra paints a hyperrealist mural of 18x16 meters. The work will show a collection of Chilean endemic insects, such as pololo, torito, peorro and green flying beetle, among others. The work will be ready on October 30 and will remain permanently as a gift to the city.
The fifth intervention, Llama Andina, will be almost 8 meters high and will be built live during the first nine days of the festival by Portuguese artist Bordalo II. The work will be made with recycled material from the telecommunications company’s network.
“Santiago will become a large garden, where people will be able to see large-scale works of typical Chilean animals and insects. We invite you to be part of this tremendous urban festival that will pay tribute to the biodiversity of our territory”, said Felipe Zegers, creative director of the festival.
“In this new edition we seek to bring the festival closer to more people. That is why for the first time we are opening the Ideas Torre Entel contest to the general public and we will once again take one of the works to the Valparaíso Region. We invite the whole family to be part of this festival" , said Entel’s CEO, Antonio Büchi.
Those who want to have a privileged view of the works can participate through Facebook and Instagram in a contest that will reward the two best photos of previous editions of the event. The winners will be able to climb with a companion to the top of the Entel Tower to experience the festival from above.
