From today, the inhabitants of the towns of Carrizalillo, in the municipality of Paredones, and Tumán, in the municipality of Navidad - O’Higgins Region - will experience a radical change in their quality of life, as they will have mobile telephony and internet services for the first time.
This is thanks to the second phase of Entel’s “Conectando Chile” project, which aims to provide voice and data connectivity to 549 rural or isolated sectors throughout Chile. In the case of the O’Higgins region, the program will benefit 3,708 residents in 17 towns and provide data connectivity to 7 schools.
The new connectivity services were inaugurated yesterday during a ceremony attended by the Undersecretary of Telecommunications, Pedro Huichalaf; Pedro Suárez, Manager of Entel’s Regulatory Department; and various authorities of the two beneficiary towns, including their respective mayors, Mr. Sammy Ormazábal López, Mayor of Paredones, and Mr. Horacio Maldonado Mondaca, Mayor of Navidad.
“I want to thank the hosts, the mayors of Paredones and Navidad, the councilors, the neighbors - for their patience in waiting for the connection. As of today, Carrizalillo and Tumán finally have voice and data connectivity, thanks to the benefits of the public tender of the 700 MHz band. With this, we are settling a historical debt we had with both cities, which will now have the opportunity to connect with the rest of the world and thus offer better development opportunities to their inhabitants,” said the Undersecretary of Telecommunications, Pedro Huichalaf, in charge of the public tender for the 700 MHz band.
Pedro Suárez, manager of Entel’s regulatory department, emphasized the importance of providing connectivity to rural or isolated areas of the country. “Initiatives like this allow us to make progress in our mission to work so that people are better connected, contribute to the development of communities and improve the quality of life of people by reducing the digital divide, in a world where technology brings us closer and makes us all equal.”
This initiative is part of the considerations outlined in the tender issued by the Ministry of Transport and Telecommunications for the development and use of the 700 MHz band, which instructs the winning companies to provide mobile telephony and network data transmission to 1,281 remote locations and 13 mandatory routes totaling more than 850 kilometers, in addition to 503 educational institutions.
In the case of Entel, the second phase of its “Conectando Chile” program, which arose as part of the company’s investment commitments in the 700 MHz network bidding process, contemplates providing connectivity to 549 rural or isolated locations in the country.
