In order to contribute to the reduction of the use of plastic bags and promote a more sustainable lifestyle in Puerto Varas, public and private entities have joined in a project that will distribute 20 thousand ecological bags among the residents of the city.
The initiative is promoted by Entel and brings together the City Council of Puerto Varas, the newspaper “El Llanquihue” and the Chamber of Commerce of Puerto Varas, which will organize the free distribution of the bags in different activities in June, September and December.
The “Ecological Bags” project aims to promote the use of reusable bags, joining a similar campaign launched by Puerto Varas in October 2014 to reduce the use of plastic bags in the city’s commerce.
“This collaboration agreement allows us to continue raising awareness about the real damage that plastic bags cause to the planet. We all want to take care of the environment and feel part of this great initiative,” said Mayor Álvaro Berger.
Nino Parodi, Entel’s Zone Manager, explained that this project is part of the company’s sustainability strategy, especially in contributing to the care of the environment, and explained that it will be replicated in other cities in the country. “It is a pilot plan that we will also implement in La Serena and Coquimbo, because our desire is to connect citizens with the care of the environment and join efforts to achieve it,” he said.
From the local Chamber of Commerce and Tourism, its president, Carola Psuying Tang, added that these projects are welcome because they add to the efforts that already exist in Puerto Varas to protect the environment.
“We are very committed to the environment and this initiative will allow us to offer our employees and their customers an ecological bag, reinforcing the commitment and concern for the environment that has existed in Puerto Varas for some time,” she said.
The reusable ecological bags will be distributed at various activities organized by the City Council, to subscribers of the El Llanquihue newspaper and to retailers who are members of the Chamber of Commerce.
During the second half of the year, the project will distribute about 60 thousand bags to the residents of Puerto Varas, Coquimbo and La Serena.
