Access to 5G technology is no longer exclusive to high-end devices. Today, it is already available in terminals of different segments, which explains that of the total number of devices sold this year by Entel, 40% are compatible with the fifth generation technology. This is only four months after the network deployment was launched in the country and thanks to its gradual progress in all regions.
According to Entel’s Deputy Product Manager for Terminals, Ignacio Reyes, “the penetration of the technology in the product mix has been faster in adoption than what we saw from 3G to 4G, and so far this year the sale of 5G devices has reached predominant shares over those of 4G”. This is because users already know that in those areas where there is already 5G coverage, they will have a better experience, with higher speed and lower latency. And with this, social networks, teleworking and gaming can be taken advantage of much better, said the executive.
As can be seen in the following chart, there are currently mid-range 5G smartphones with prices close to $180,000 and $190,000, such as the Xiaomi Redmi Note 10 5G and the Samsung A22 5G respectively. On the other hand, Apple devices, despite having a higher price and being “premium”, are also among users’ favorites.

“We are making significant efforts and investing heavily in the deployment of 5G infrastructure so that our users can take advantage of it throughout the country. We are already operating commercially in nine regions and we are moving forward to reach everywhere. Today, we are also leaders in the sale of 5G devices, and we expect to continue consolidating this position in 2022”, said Reyes.
Recommendations for choosing the right device
To choose the right smartphone, it is important to balance the needs of the user with the particular specifications of the phone. Therefore, it is key to identify how important are the quality of the cameras, screen size, memory and battery, both in the requirements of each one and in the budget that is managed.
In addition, certain myths associated with 5G need to be debunked. While it may eventually consume more battery looking for better connectivity, this is balanced with greater efficiency in data usage, by downloading everything much faster, which translates into less time of use.
Most models have fast charging features, battery saver mode and technology that allows for efficient capacity management, so when using the handset on a normal basis, the 5G experience should be balanced with the battery capabilities in place.
