Mobile telephony and internet reach the town of Aysén for the first time:

• The town of Bajada de Ibáñez, in the municipality of Río Ibáñez, joined Entel’s “Conectando Chile” (in English “Connecting Chile”) program, which since last year has been delivering connectivity to isolated localities throughout the country.

• The telephony and mobile Internet services correspond to the considerations established in the public tender for the use of the 700 MHz band.

As of today, the inhabitants of Bajada de Ibáñez, in the municipality of Río Ibáñez, Aysén Region, will have a radical change in their quality of life, since for the first time they will have mobile telephony and Internet services.

This was possible thanks to the second stage of Entel’s “Conectando Chile” project, the objective of which is to provide voice and data connectivity, which in the case of the Aysén Region will benefit a total of 23 localities, providing connectivity to almost one thousand inhabitants.

The new connectivity services were inaugurated today in the framework of a ceremony attended by the Seremi of Transport and Telecommunications of the Aysén Region, Alejandra Aguilar; the Intendant of the Aysén Region, Karina Acevedo and Patricia Muñoz, head of Public Affairs and Institutional Relations of Entel.

“For us as a government it is very important, because one of our main objectives is to reduce the digital divide, so that all the people in very isolated locations such as this one, have connectivity and equal access to all the information resources. We have already made several inaugurations, and it is important to point out that all of them have been with Entel, but the most important thing is that this fulfills a long-awaited dream for the people of Bajada de Ibañez, because there was a long wait, but they now have the service, they are now connected to make use of this world of information”, said the Seremi of Transport and Telecommunications of the Aysén Region, Alejandra Aguilar.

Entel’s Head of Public Affairs and Institutional Engagement, Patricia Muñoz, highlighted the importance of providing connectivity to rural or isolated areas of the country. “Initiatives like this allow us to move forward in our mission to work so that people live better connected, contribute to the development of the communities and to the improvement of the quality of life of people, through the reduction of the digital gap, in a world where technology brings us closer and makes us all equal”.

This opening of telephony and mobile internet services in the town of Bajada de Ibáñez, benefited 19 families, composed of a total of 30 people, who from now on will be able to be connected with the rest of Chile and the world.

This initiative is part of the considerations established in the bidding process carried out by the Ministry of Transport and Telecommunications for the development and use of the 700 MHz band. It instructs the companies that were awarded the project to provide cellular telephony and network data transmission to 1,281 remote localities and 13 compulsory routes, which total more than 850 kilometers, in addition to 503 educational establishments.

In the case of Entel, the second stage of its “Conectando Chile” program, which arose as part of the investment commitments assumed by the company in the 700 MHz network bidding process, considers providing connectivity to 549 rural or isolated localities in the country.
