As of September 2022:

With the aim of contributing to the circular economy and reducing the digital divide through reuse, the initiative of Entel, Kyklos and the Centro Inclusivo de Reciclaje collects computers, tablets and cell phones to be refurbished and donated to people in vulnerable contexts.

This year, a new milestone has been added, where a 100% electric truck is touring the country, collecting electronic devices and reducing the impact on the environment.

The target of “ Reutiliza por Chile” (“Reuse for Chile” in English) by Entel, Kyklos and the Centro Inclusivo de Reciclaje (CiR), which in its third version continues to collect unused electronic devices, was to surpass the 8 thousand devices in 2021. The good news is that, to date, the campaign has already achieved 90% of the target, and 7,252 electronic devices have been received, including tablets, cell phones and computers.

The objective of “Reutiliza”, which began in June and will continue until December 30, is to contribute to the circular economy and reduce the digital divide through reuse, restoring unused electronic devices that are then given to students in vulnerable situations. Of the total collected so far this year, 4,280 are cell phones, 1,273 CPUs, 1,351 notebooks and 348 tablets, which are being reviewed at the CiR to assess whether they can be given a new use or will be recycled by the company Midas, to give them a proper final disposal and prevent them from reaching landfills.

Globally, United Nations data reveal that nearly 50 million tons of electronic waste are generated, of which only 17.4% is recycled. In Latin America, the figure is more alarming, since only 3% of it is recycled properly.

And in Chile? According to estimates by the Ministry of the Environment and Fundación Chile, each inhabitant generates an average of 9.6 kilos of electronic waste per year. Only 3.4% of this is recycled and it is projected that by the year 2027 the average generation per person will be 14 kilos and the amount of electronic waste will increase by 46.5%.

“At Entel we have been working for years on the design and implementation of initiatives aimed at contributing to sustainability, especially considering the impact of our operation. Thus, we have developed measures that promote the circular economy, highlighting our electronic device recycling program, with which for 8 years we have enabled mailboxes in our stores, adding this 2022 a new version of the Reutiliza Campaign, which allows us to collect devices throughout the country to give them a second life”, said the director of Sustainability and Environment of Entel, Jimena Del Valle.

Precisely, this 2022, “Reutiliza” decided to visit 39 locations in the country, from Arica to Punta Arenas, visiting schools and contributing to the environmental education of children and young people. In addition, in line with sustainability, the tour of Chile is currently being carried out in a 100% electric truck, which reduces the environmental impact of CO2 emissions by up to five times compared to a combustion vehicle.

“Reutiliza” was awarded earlier this year by the Sustainability Hub of Pulso newspaper, in the category “Reduction of Inequalities”, due to the social, economic and environmental impact it has generated since its inception in 2020. And this year it has already made donations to different educational institutions in the Metropolitan Region, and to social organizations in the Araucanía Region together with Fundación País Digital, among others.

“We are extremely proud of this campaign and the impact it has had”, said Kyklos’ founding partner and Corporate Affairs Manager, Sebastián Herceg, adding that this “is one of our most important projects, as it demonstrates two of our main principles: that collaboration is the key to generating great changes and that environmental problems are also an opportunity to solve social problems”.

The tour began in Arica and has already passed through Iquique, Antofagasta, Calama, Copiapó, Vallenar, Coquimbo, La Serena, Ovalle, Quillota, Quilpué, Villa Alemana, San Antonio, Santiago, Rancagua, San Fernando, Curicó, Talca, Linares, Chillán, Talcahuano, Concepción and Los Ángeles.

“Reutiliza por Chile” will then move on to Temuco, Villarrica, Valdivia, La Unión, Osorno, Llanquihue, Puerto Varas, Puerto Montt, Ancud, Castro, Puerto Aysén, Coyhaique, Chile Chico, Puerto Natales and Punta Arenas.
