For the first time since the beginning of the initiative, a truck traveled through different cities of the country collecting computers, tablets and cell phones, managing to contribute to the circular economy through the reuse of more than 31 tons of electronic devices.

This year, thanks to the campaign, more than 1,100 refurbished computers have been donated to students in vulnerable contexts.

With the commitment to contribute to the circular economy and digital inclusion through the recovery of unused electronic devices, the campaign and tour “ Reutiliza por Chile” ("Reuse for Chile" in English), promoted by Entel, Kyklos and the Centro Inclusivo de Reciclaje (CiR), surpassed this year’s target, collecting to date more than 9,200 unused devices. This is equivalent to more than 31 tons of electronic devices.

Thousands of cell phones, CPUs, notebooks and tablets have been received in the campaign and diagnosed at the CiR to evaluate whether they can be put to a new use and donated to low-income communities, or whether they will be recycled to ensure proper disposal and prevent them from reaching landfills.

The initiative, which began in June of this year touring the different regions of Chile, is the latest in a series of actions that Entel has carried out as part of the conscious transformation axis of the company’s sustainability strategy. This story began 8 years ago, when electronic device recycling mailboxes were set up in different Entel branches and, currently, new mailboxes are being deployed in different districts of the country. In 2020, due to the needs identified in the pandemic for children and young people to stay connected, it was decided to go a step further and move forward in the repair of equipment and its subsequent donation to students in need. Thus was born the “Reutiliza” project, by Entel and Kyklos.

In 2022, after two years of campaigning in Santiago, the decision was made to leave the capital and take this initiative to different cities in the north and south of the country. There were 42 towns throughout Chile where unused electronic devices were received. In addition, in 7 regions, the journey was made in a 100% electric truck, which reduced the environmental impact in CO2 emissions by up to five times, compared to a combustion vehicle.

The tour began in Arica and then continued in Iquique, Antofagasta, Calama, Copiapó, Vallenar, Coquimbo, La Serena, Ovalle, Quillota, Quilpué, Villa Alemana, San Antonio, Santiago, Rancagua, San Fernando, Curicó, Talca, Linares, San Javier, Chillán, Talcahuano, Concepción, Los Ángeles, Temuco, Villarrica, Pucón, Valdivia, La Unión, Osorno, Frutillar, Puerto Varas, Puerto Montt, Ancud, Castro, Puerto Aysén, Coyhaique, Chile Chico and Puerto Natales, and closing in Punta Arenas this 2022 version.

“At Entel we are very happy to culminate this year with a successful campaign, which for the first time travels around Chile and allows us to reconnect directly with people and make them participants in an initiative with an approach aimed at contributing to sustainability, since in addition to the obvious environmental benefit, linked to reuse and recycling, it allows us to contribute to the circular economy and digital inclusion”, said Jimena del Valle, Director of Sustainability and Environment at Entel.

“We are convinced that caring for our environment also involves caring for people”, commented Sebastián Herceg, engineering and circular design manager and founding partner of Kyklos, “And that is why this project fills us with pride. It not only focuses on waste recovery and product reuse, but also has a social focus that provides job opportunities for people with cognitive disabilities, through our Centro Inclusivo de Reciclaje, and contributes to the reduction of the digital divide that exists in our country, through donations of equipment”.

Additionally, during this year more than 1,100 devices have already been donated to different educational institutions in the Metropolitan Region, as well as to social organizations in the Araucanía Region, together with Fundación País Digital, and for the closing of this 2022 version, the Dellamira Rebeca Aguilar and Elba Ojeda Gómez schools and scholarship students from the Liceo Nobelius in Punta Arenas, who will also benefit from the campaign and the donation of the people who no longer use their devices.

The commitment of the telecommunications and technology company has endured over time and based on the constant work, the “Reutiliza” project was awarded earlier this year by the Sustainability Hub of La Tercera’s Pulso newspaper, in the “Reduction of Inequalities” category, due to the social, economic and environmental impact it has generated since its inception in 2020.
