Chile consumes approximately 3.4 billion plastic bags per year, according to the Association of Plastics Industries (Asipla) and the Yo Reciclo Foundation. To help reduce this number and contribute to environmental protection, public and private entities in the Coquimbo region have joined forces to distribute 40,000 reusable bags in the area.
The project, called “Bolsas Ecológicas” (in English “Ecological Bags”), brings together Entel, the municipalities of Coquimbo and La Serena, and the Chambers of Commerce of both cities, with the aim of promoting the use of reusable bags to reduce the environmental impact caused by plastic.
“On average, a plastic bag is used for between twelve and twenty minutes, and it takes between fifteen and a thousand years to decompose. Now people are taking responsibility for the bags they use,” said La Serena Mayor Roberto Jacob.
“Although there is a lot of talk about the issue, there are still few people who are committed to using ecological bags. As a municipality, with the ordinance we created and by signing this agreement with Entel, we wanted to encourage more people to carry their own cloth or paper bags when shopping, whether at the fair or in neighborhood stores, to reduce the use of plastic,” Jacob added.
Meanwhile, the mayor of Coquimbo, Cristián Galleguillos, said: “I appreciate the initiative promoted by Entel to deliver 20,000 ecological bags in Coquimbo by the end of the year. This is another action within the Coquimbo Limpio Municipal Program. We will continue to work to minimize the use of plastic bags and achieve this goal, the joint efforts of the municipality and the private sector are necessary”.
Christian Radich, regional manager of Entel, explained that this project is part of the company’s sustainability strategy, especially in contributing to the care of the environment, and explained that it will be replicated in other cities in the country. “This is a pilot plan that we will also implement in Puerto Varas, because our desire is to connect Chileans with the care of the environment and to join forces to achieve this,” he said.
The president of the Chamber of Commerce and Tourism of La Serena, Paulina Hernández, said: “We have joined this initiative because we want to contribute to the care of the environment by distributing ecological bags among our consumers and we hope that little by little this initiative will be replicated by other companies”.
Meanwhile, Marviola Rivera, President of the Chamber of Commerce and Tourism of Coquimbo, added that “we are proud to be part of an initiative that seeks to contribute to the care of the environment through actions as simple as using an ecological bag. P We will do our best to achieve the massive diffusion of this type of bag among the people”.
The reusable ecological bags will be distributed during various activities organized by the municipalities, in retail stores affiliated to the Chambers of Commerce, among others.
During the second half of the year, in the months of June, September and December, the project expects to distribute about 60 thousand bags in the cities of Puerto Varas, Coquimbo and La Serena.
