The EntelCrab, a robot operated by the national champions, and which owes its name to its similarity to a crab and to Entel for its contribution as a sponsor of the team, came in 59th place out of 94 teams, failing to qualify for the round of 16.
“We are proud to have reached this stage, because it allowed us to engage with teams from other countries, where most of them had already participated in other world championships, so we are happy for the opportunity and to represent Chile in the most important competition in the world,” explained Nicolás Riquelme, the team’s coach.
The young students made a positive balance of their performance, since this competition allowed them to engage with students from 44 countries, being a platform for future competitions. “Although we would have liked to advance more, we are happy because of our current participation we were invited to China to be part of their robotics world cup. In August we completed one year as a team and we didn’t know much about it, now next year we will come with the goal of winning” , said Tomás Matus, mentor of the Puertovarinos.
The team - composed of Daniela Silva, Tomás Matus, Rafael Guzmán, Ignacio Mansilla, Pablo Mera, Felipe Bustos, Alvaro Bahamondes and Nicolás Wörner - will arrive in their hometown next week with the mission of delivering four kits to vulnerable schools where they will conduct robotics workshops to bring science and technology to the classroom, as part of a day that will be held internationally called “March for Science”.
The Vex Robotics Competition was held between April 19 and 22 in Louisville, Kentucky with the representation of countries from all continents, 1,480 teams, 18,000 participants and 180,000 attendees, in figures this has been its most successful version in its ten years of development.
