The initiative that brings together Entel, the Municipality of Iquique and the newspaper La Estrella, seeks to encourage environmental care and raise awareness about the effects generated by the use of plastic bags.

A project that hopes to contribute to the care of the environment and promote a more sustainable way of life in the Tarapacá Region, has brought together the Ilustre Municipalidad de Iquique, Entel and the newspaper La Estrella, whose representatives signed a collaboration agreement yesterday to distribute free of charge about 15 thousand reusable bags in various activities during the year.

The project - which will also be joined by the cities of Valdivia, Villarrica, Temuco and Rancagua - aims to reduce the use of plastic bags and raise awareness of the damage that their indiscriminate use can cause to the environment.

“We value the initiative of delivering reusable bags, because it is an action that complements very well the efforts made by the municipality to make Iquique a more sustainable, friendly and environmentally friendly city. In short, a better place to live. We will continue working to minimize the use of plastic bags and, to achieve this goal, joint efforts between the Municipality and private enterprise are necessary”, said Mauricio Soria, Mayor of Iquique.

The mayor was joined by Katherine Martorell, Entel’s Director of Sustainability and Communities, who explained that “Entel is committed to people and the environment, as we understand that our responsibility must go beyond our operations. We feel that our mission is more than technological connectivity, it is connectivity between people and, of course, to contribute to generating a cleaner and better world so that the next generations can have a more sustainable future”.

In this regard, he pointed out that during 2017 approximately 80 thousand reusable bags will be distributed in the cities of Valdivia, Iquique, Temuco, Rancagua and Villarrica. “Our aim is to connect Chileans with the care of the environment and to join public-private efforts to achieve this”, he specified.

The reusable bags will be distributed in various activities organized by the municipality and in activities to be carried out by Entel throughout the year.

“The effects of climate change are being felt more and more strongly. As a media outlet we must promptly assume an attitude that contributes to the care of the environment,” said Sebastián Bottaro, commercial manager and representative of the newspaper.

This project began during the first half of 2016, when more than 50 thousand were distributed in the cities of La Serena, Coquimbo and Puerto Varas and will also continue by adding more cities during this year.
