The goal for this year is to collect more than 30 tons of disused equipment:

The initiative, which in 2023 collected 23 tons of unused electronic devices, seeks to contribute to the circular economy.

The UN warned that in 2022 people generated 62 million tons of electronic waste globally and less than a quarter were properly recycled, and it is expected to reach 82 million tons by 2030.

During Earth Month, the Entel Reuse for Chile campaign chose the city of Osorno to kick off the 2024 version. Three years have passed since this initiative, which seeks to contribute to the circular economy of electronic devices, began to travel the country from end to end in search of disused equipment and, for the first time, they gave the official go-ahead in the south zone.

This project, led by Entel and in partnership with Kyklos, has two main objectives: on the one hand, to contribute to the circular economy through the recycling or restoration of cell phones, CPUs, tablets and computers in disuse. On the other hand, it invites people to contribute to digital inclusion, since each year a portion of this equipment is recovered and reconditioned, and then donated to educational establishments and students in vulnerable situations.

This initiative makes even more sense considering that the United Nations (UN) warned a few days ago that 62 million tons of electronic waste were generated in 2022, but only 22.3% were properly recycled, and it is estimated that 82 million tons of electronic waste will be generated in 2030.

The launch of the 2024 version of the Entel Reuse for Chile tour was held at the Plaza de Armas in Osorno and was attended by the mayor, Emeterio Carrillo; the regional councilor and member of the Environmental Commission, Alexis Casanova; and the director of Public Affairs and Institutional Relations of Entel, Claudio Anabalón, as well as representatives of civil society such as the Environmental Brigade of the Sociedad del Socorro de Señora School.

The activity also announced the news for this 2024 edition: the goal is to exceed the 23 tons collected last year and to collect 30 tons of disused equipment. On the other hand, almost twice as many cities will be visited as in 2023, going from 56 to 106 for this year, between Arica and Punta Arenas, many of which currently do not have a recycling system for electrical and electronic equipment, so the Reuse campaign is often the only option. Also, 75% of the route will continue to be done in a 100% electric truck in order to reduce up to five times the environmental impact in CO2 emissions, compared to a combustion truck.

"We are pleased that Osorno has been chosen to launch this campaign, since in today's world recycling has become an important action to have a more sustainable environment. This initiative comes to contribute to the series of actions that, as a municipality, we are implementing in this area, and where we can highlight our successful "Community Recycling Program" which, to date, has collected more than 700 tons of waste such as paper, cardboard, glass and plastics", said the mayor of Osorno, Emeterio Carrillo.

The regional councilor and member of the Environmental Commission, Alexis Casanova, also mentioned that "the Los Lagos Region and the city of Osorno, in particular, face multiple challenges in the environmental and circular economy areas. The UN alerted us a few days ago about the problem represented by the sustained increase of electronic waste worldwide and the Entel Reuse for Chile tour contributes to address it in a very concrete way in our country"..

"We are happy to launch the 2024 version of the Entel Reuse for Chile in Osorno. It is the first time that we start the campaign from the south of Chile and specifically in the Lakes Region, which is one of the regions that in the history of this program has collected more devices. This year Entel celebrates 60 years bringing technology closer to Chileans, no matter where they live, and we are in the midst of implementing our sustainability strategy, which is aligned with our DNA. One of the pillars refers to our contribution to a sustainable transformation and this initiative seeks, precisely, to take charge of the management of electronic waste, to recycle it or recover equipment that can be reconditioned and donated to young people who need it most" emphasized Entel's Director of Public Affairs and Institutional Relations, Claudio Anabalón.

The executive also commented that between 2022 and 2023, 178 pieces of equipment were collected in Osorno alone and 865 in the Los Lagos Region.

More from Reuse for Chile

In its 2023 version, Reuse for Chile collected more than 14 thousand unused electronic devices, 6 thousand more than the previous year, and donated close to 1,000 refurbished devices that benefited students from different regions of Chile.

Along with the truck's visit to various parts of the country, Kyklos has been responsible for leading talks and activities related to raising awareness about electronic recycling in various educational establishments throughout Chile. Between 2022 and 2023 they visited 137 schools, thanks to which almost 14,600 students learned about electronic waste and its effects. Specifically in the Los Lagos Region, 20 schools were visited during 2022 and 244 students participated in these activities.

Since the Reuse for Chile tour began in 2020, 35,870 pieces of equipment have been collected throughout the country, which has allowed the donation of 3,490 refurbished equipment to students in vulnerable contexts.
