Entel analyzes data consumption:

The Metropolitan Region experienced an increase of more than 41% in mobile data traffic.

December 2020 was the month that experienced the highest mobile and fixed internet usage, reaching 29,412,743 gigabytes in mobile data and 93,095,203 gigabytes (gb) in fixed at the regional level. This matches national data, where during the same period 93,788,656 gb in mobile data and 96,529,430 gb in landline data were obtained.

The highest national traffic was recorded on March 22, when the curfew was announced throughout the country; between July 15 and 19, when the 10% withdrawal of pension funds bill was approved in the Chamber of Deputies; and in October, due to the plebiscite.

2020 was a year marked by the world health crisis, which forced people to change their behavioral habits. Thus, teleworking, distance learning, online procedures and meetings through different web platforms became part of everyday life.

In this sense, mobile and fixed data traffic increased considerably in the country, reaching numbers never seen before. According to the analysis made by the technology and telecommunications company Entel, at a national level, in 2020 there was a traffic of 926,418,669 gigabytes in mobile data, much higher than the 580,741,771 gigabytes recorded during 2019, representing a 59.5% increase.

Likewise, last year was marked by different news events that affected all of Chile, which was reflected in the dates on which peaks in data transfers by different users occurred. For example, on March 22, when a nationwide curfew was decreed between 22:00 and 05:00 hrs, in addition to stricter travel controls; between July 15 and 19, due to the approval of the withdrawal of 10% of pension funds by the Chamber of Deputies; and in October, a month marked by the constitutional plebiscite.

Similarly, the analysis conducted by Entel reveals that in the Metropolitan Region there was a similar phenomenon to the national one, where there was an increase of 41% in mobile traffic when comparing 2020 with 2019.

December was the month with the highest average mobile data consumption in 2020, with 34.7% more traffic than March. In the case of the Metropolitan Region, it reached 93,095,203 gigabytes (gb) in fixed and 29,412,743 gigabytes in mobile, experiencing an increase of 23.64% in mobile data traffic and 56.7% in fixed regarding March 2020 when the health emergency began.

[

“2020 was a year marked by the sanitary contingency, which forced people to adopt new behavioral habits. The confinement was a catalyst for the digitization of people and companies, accelerating the adoption of practices that are here to stay. This challenges us to continue working to maintain the quality of our services in all areas and to continue consolidating our infrastructure", said Manuel Araya, Entel’s Manager of Regulation and Corporate Affairs.

4G customers and most used applications

During 2020, the technology and telecommunications company Entel experienced an increase in its customers in different modalities. Thus, during 2020, more than 5 million customers were registered in the agreement modality. Likewise, during the past year, Entel recorded a historic figure in its 4G customers, which exceeded 6 million users, leading both categories at the national level.

[

“In the last two years, our 4G infrastructure has increased by 98% to respond to the growing needs of our customers, as evidenced by the increase in connections and data usage. In this way, we are also contributing to narrowing the digital gaps that exist in our country and ensuring that all people have access to quality internet”, said Manuel Araya, Entel’s Manager of Regulation and Corporate Affairs.

During the month of December, the mobile applications that grew the most in usage were:

  1. Spotify, with 33,3%.
  2. YouTube, with 32,7%.
  3. TikTok, with 11%.
  4. Instagram, with 9%.

This explosive rise in mobile and fixed data traffic, as well as the increase in the use of mobile applications, brings with it an important responsibility on the part of all users, since they are increasingly exposed to possible cyber-attacks. In this sense, the technology and telecommunications company Entel gives some tips to be protected in the digital world:

  • Use complex passwords, including different characters, numbers and symbols.
  • Avoid connecting to unknown WiFi networks.
  • Beware of phishing, emails or messages that appear to be important or from a known company and request personal data or banking information.
  • Before opening a text message or e-mail, make sure you know the sender and verify the data.
  • Keep your information backed up.
  • Always get information from official sources and confirm all information before posting.
  • Do not open links from e-mails if you are not sure they are from a reliable sender.
