Since the second half of March, we have witnessed how life has changed dramatically due to the sanitary contingency of Covid-19 and the need to stay in our homes to ensure social distancing, a scenario in which telecommunications have played a fundamental role. Thus, since March 17, there has been an increase in mobile and fixed data traffic, which is directly related to teleworking, distance learning or simply because there has been a clear call not to go out and privilege digital platforms to carry out procedures that were previously carried out in person.
This explains why mobile data traffic has remained at levels higher than the “pre-pandemic” period. According to the analysis of the technology and telecommunications company Entel, in the Metropolitan Region there were 11,208,898 gigabytes in mobile data traffic during the first half of March, which compares with 12,570,577 gigabytes in the second half of May, equivalent to an increase of 12.1%.
In addition, it was identified that the highest mobile data usage in the region is generated between 21:00 and 24:00 hours, exceeding 92,000 gigabytes. On the contrary, the period between 05:00 and 07:00 hours is when the lowest amount of data traffic is experienced, reaching between 22,000 and 22,500 gigabytes.
“At the national level, the increase in daily data traffic begins to be experienced steadily from 10:00 a.m., reaching a peak between 22:00 and 24:00 hours. Work and distance education force us to be connected, but at the end of the day, connecting with our loved ones, whom we have not been able to see face to face for months, and moments of leisure and entertainment, have become very important. This explains why the increase in daily data traffic is generated towards the end of the day", said Manuel Araya, Entel’s Manager of Regulation and Corporate Affairs.
In addition, according to Entel’s analysis, May has been the month with the highest fixed data consumption, surpassing that recorded in the second half of March, when the pandemic was declared nationwide. In this sense, the first fortnight of May exceeded by 3.4% the period described above, and the second fortnight reflected an increase of 21.2% regarding the second half of March.
At the national level, voice traffic (calls) increased by 29.8% since the beginning of the health emergency in Chile.
Also, according to Entel’s analysis, the mobile applications whose traffic grew the most at the national level during the second half of May were:
In addition, Entel’s analysis evidences that Google searches are up 50% in May.
Change in the use of the telecommunications network
Due to the pandemic and the changes in habits that most of us have experienced, moving from face-to-face to digital activities, there has been a substantial increase in data traffic. This change of pattern also impacts the telecommunications network, since “the network is designed for usage patterns different from those experienced today in the pandemic, since in a normal context people move around the city, using the mobile network in different places, or the fixed network in their workplaces. Today this behavior has changed, and we are permanently working on reinforcing the network, doing everything necessary to ensure its operation in these more extreme conditions, maintaining communication in a context of this nature, since we know that being connected plays a key role", said the executive.
As a result of the same change in the pattern of use with a network that considered higher uses according to the movements made by people during the day, the company is sending recommendations for its Internet connection.
