More than 75 kilometers in the 5G network:

Currently all stations have 100% 4G mobile coverage and 54% of the subway network has 5G deployment.

On Line 1 alone, 10 TB per day (4G+5G) are trafficked on Entel's network, which is equivalent to more than 20,000 hours of video.

The Santiago metro is used by thousands of people every day, whether on short or longer journeys, passengers use this time for different activities. Whether as leisure time or to manage pending work, what is clear is that many use their cell phones to listen to music, play games, watch videos or a series, or answer email.

In total, the Santiago Metro has 149 kilometers and 100% is covered with 4G technology. Regarding the 5G network, the technology and telecommunications company has coverage in 75.7 kilometers (54%) of the subway.

“We are extremely happy to celebrate our 60th anniversary together with Metro, and also because both companies share the same history. The construction of the Entel Tower and Metro La Moneda began in 1969 and 1970, and finished in 1974 and 1975 respectively. In other words, two symbols of the city's connectivity and progress have a joint history, which is reflected today in the coverage of the entire network”, explained Entel's general manager, Antonio Büchi.

Data traffic increases year by year in Chile, and at a general level, it has increased by 311% comparing the first half of 2019 with the first half of 2024.

But what are users' favorite apps? The technology and telecommunications company, Entel, conducted an analysis to identify which apps passengers use when transporting themselves on Metro.

On Line 1 alone, 10 TB are trafficked per day (on 4G and 5G networks), which is equivalent to more than 20,000 hours of video. Within this overwhelming traffic, the applications preferred by Metro users are Instagram, Tik Tok, Facebook and Spotify, adding between the five of them 26.6 Terabytes in all Metro lines in just one day. Instagram is the application that consumes about 30% of the volume.

Las estaciones con mayor tráfico de datos al mes son:

  • Baquedano: 27.264 GB
  • Tobalaba: 24.638 GB
  • Pedro de Valdivia: 24.308 GB

“Currently, Metro has one hundred percent mobile coverage, being the most extensive network with mobile connection in South America. This wide coverage tells us about the progress of technologies, but also about the common role played by telecommunications and transport, connecting and bringing closer, putting technological evolution at the service of people's needs and quality of life” commented the Minister of Transport and Telecommunications, Juan Carlos Muñoz.

For his part, Metro's general manager, Felipe Bravo, pointed out that “Entel has accompanied us throughout our development, we grew together and it was the first company that illuminated our entire network. Today we have a coverage of 149 kilometers, 143 stations, all of them covered by telecommunications and, of course, giving our users the service they need, full connectivity, full access to different platforms, which are also a very important source of information for them when we have any news” he explained.

Considering that La Moneda station is the closest to the Entel Tower and was the first to be connected in 1999, it will be called La Moneda Entel Station from August until September 9, as part of the celebration of the company's 60th anniversary.
