The eleventh version of the Entel Santiago Marathon had a massive turnout, with 30 thousand registered runners and several hundred people who took to the streets to cheer on the runners, from 8 am, when the first start was given in front of the Palacio de La Moneda.
Wearing the official water green T-shirt, the runners ran through the streets of Santiago crossing 8 municipalities to complete the 10k, 21k and 42k circuits.
The winner of this eMDS was the Kenyan Luka Lobuwan, who registered 02:09:39, breaking the existing record in South America for a marathon.
“Something unprecedented has happened here. In this version of the Entel Marathon of Santiago, Luka Lobuwan clocked 2:09:39, setting a new best time in South America and, at the same time, breaking the 42k record of our marathon, which was 2:11:01. In addition, Julius Ketter, who came second in the same category, clocking 2:09:55, also beat the time set last year”,, explained Fernando Jamarne, president of the Santiago Marathon Corporation.
In the women’s category, the winner of the 42k was the Peruvian Inés Melchor, who clocked a time of 02:34:12.
One of the most emotional moments of the day was the arrival of Érika Olivera at the target, who said goodbye to the high competition after running the 21k, in a recreational way and receiving the affection of the runners and the people in the streets.
“I want to thank everyone who supported me and all the runners with whom I shared. I am very happy to finish a sports race in this way. I thank the organization of the Entel Marathon of Santiago for finishing like this. I am very calm and happy, I have been working for four years and today I retire with the feeling that I did everything I set out to do”, said the national record holder, who has a successful 30-year career.
To bid farewell to Érika, the Érika Olivera award was also presented for the first time to the first Chilean man and woman to cross the finish line of the marathon. The winners on this occasion, who received the award from the hand of the honoree herself, were Francisco Méndez, with a time of 02:25:06, and Clara Morales, with 02:47:22.
In addition, the marathoners were able to follow the exact route of the 42 kilometers 195 meters thanks to the Blue Line, a demarcation present for the first time in this sporting event. “In this marathon we had several novelties, one of them the Blue Line that guided the marathoners through the exact distance of the race saving energy so that they could complete the feat in the best possible time,”, said Felipe Salas, spokesman for the Entel Maratón de Santiago.
For Francisco Riquelme, General Director of the event, this version of the eMDS had all the ingredients to be, once again, a running party. “We are very happy because the runners were able to enjoy all the services provided especially for the needs of each distance and live the experience of running in the best marathon in South America,” he said.
Rodrigo Solar, Entel’s marketing manager, commented: “The Entel Marathon of Santiago has allowed us to unite and connect people from all over the country and abroad. Thanks to this race, for the first time 30,000 people connected with each other through sport. We are very happy for the great party we were able to live this Sunday”.
