Two new towns have been added to the program promoted by the Ministry of Transport and Telecommunications to connect rural or isolated areas. These are Huite and Choen, in the municipality of Quemchi, whose inhabitants will have access to telephone and mobile Internet connections from today, thanks to Entel.
This initiative is possible thanks to the conditions set out in the tender for the use of the 700 MHz band, promoted by the Ministry of Transport and Telecommunications through Subtel. These conditions will make it possible to provide connectivity to 1,281 isolated localities throughout the country, 245 of which correspond to the Los Lagos region.
At the opening of these services in the municipality of Quemchi, the Minister of Transport and Telecommunications, Andrés Gómez-Lobo, said that “the conditions of this tender allow us to close the digital divide in the country, advancing in geographical and social inclusion, which will allow the inhabitants of this area to have access to voice and data services”.
Thanks to the 700 MHz public tender, the telecom operators awarded the various projects will have to provide mobile telephony and data transmission services with Internet access not only to rural areas, but also to 13 routes throughout the country, with a total length of more than 850 kilometers. In the case of the towns of Huite and Choen, the service will be provided by Entel, which will also have to provide connectivity to 52 educational institutions in the region.
On this occasion, Entel’s Manager of Regulation and Corporate Affairs, Manuel Araya, commented that “we are very proud to launch this second phase of our program ‘‘Conectando Chile’’ in Chiloé, as it is a new and important step in our commitment to work towards closing the digital divide. Thanks to this project, thousands of Chileans throughout the country, no matter where they live, will have access to technology and will not have to travel to urban centers to access mobile telephony and Internet services, which will have a positive impact on their quality of life.”
In the case of Entel, the second phase of the “Conectando Chile” program, which arose as part of the company’s investment commitments in the 700 MHz network bidding process, will provide connectivity to 549 rural or isolated communities in Chile - 105 in the Los Lagos region and 42 on the island of Chiloé - 212 schools and 373 kilometers of roads.
