Telemedicine is getting closer and closer to becoming a reality in Chile. Entel, in alliance with Ericsson and Qualcomm, performed a remote ultrasound over 5G network, becoming the first test of this type carried out in the country. It was a pilot test, carried out at the CESFAM Esteban Gumucio in the commune of La Granja.
This activity is carried out within the framework of the pilot plan authorized by the Chilean Government to Entel, which allows to experiment for 6 months in the 28 GHz band. In addition, the activity is part of the pilot plans for the digital development of productive sectors delivered by the State in February 2019.
In the test, it was possible to see how a doctor directed the examination through a joystick (or wireless joystick control) that allowed remote control of the ultrasound scanner’s movements through a sensorized glove that was held by a paramedic in another part of the room.
This takes on special importance if we consider the geographical reality of our country, which often represents a real barrier to access first level medical services.
The activity was attended by the Minister of Health, Jaime Mañalich; the Undersecretary of Telecommunications, Pamela Gidi; the Mayor of La Granja, Felipe Delpin; and the CEO of Entel, Antonio Büchi, as well as representatives of the community.
5G technology, which will be deployed over the next few years around the world, is key to innovations such as this in the world of telemedicine, both because of the high amount of data that needs to be transmitted and the low latency required to eliminate lag times in transmission.
The activity also showed a space that simulated the living room of a house that in its TV set was using 5G in what is called “wireless fiber” (being able to appreciate that the performance of this technology is similar to physical fiber optics) and a speed test.
“The point of developing various technologies is to concretely improve people’s quality of life. That is what we seek with the use of 5G technology, which we are working to deploy during our administration. One concrete effect of the progress allowed by 5G is that it will allow many people to access quality health care and receive diagnoses without having to travel long distances to the capitals of each region, or even beyond. With this technology we will bring closer to those who live in isolated areas of the country" , said the Minister of Transport and Telecommunications, Gloria Hutt.
This action by Entel is aligned with the policy declared by the Undersecretary of Telecommunications, in the sense of strengthening and accelerating actions to favor the deployment of 5G in Chile over the next few years.
“The characteristics of the future 5G network, such as its high speed and lower latency, will allow the development of Telemedicine and multiple applications in the area of Health, where the lack of specialists in regions, mainly in extreme or remote areas, can be supplied. This, together with our Digital Matrix plan and added to other initiatives, such as the development of autonomous vehicles, the internet of things and its multiple applications, smart cities, among others, will change the way in which users relate to different aspects of their daily lives, giving them access to a better quality of life", said the Undersecretary of Telecommunications, Pamela Gidi.
The authority added that “President Piñera gave us the mandate to promote the development of 5G technology in the country, so that we can face the challenges that the digital revolution will demand. We want this advance to benefit the quality of life of all users, but also all the productive sectors of the country such as mining, agriculture, etc., so that they grow in productivity and efficiency, and contribute to the development of Chile”
Antonio Büchi said that “we are proud to carry out these tests today in La Granja, which show in a tangible way how 5G can have a positive impact on people’s lives. With these tests we were able to show what will be possible with this technology of the future, which will allow society in general to live connectivity experiences that will open doors to infinite possibilities”.
“I am convinced that technology helps to reduce social gaps, but for this to happen, those of us who administer lower-income communes have to provide tools and train skills, especially among our children and young people”, said the mayor of La Granja.
Potential of 5G
5G is the acronym commonly used to refer to the fifth generation of wireless telecommunications services. 3G gave the ability to make calls, send text messages and surf the Internet. 4G was the first native technology for mobile data transmission, which resulted in increased browsing capacity and speed. Subsequently, the latter evolved to LTE, which improved consistency and speed.
5G will allow all of the above, but with much higher transfer speeds of up to 10 gigabits per second. In addition, its lower latency will allow adding real-time interaction to voice and image communications, which will drive a new era of smart cities and the Internet of Things, which refers to the digital interconnection of everyday objects through the Internet.
On this occasion, the test was conducted in the 28GHz millimeter band, which supports advanced 5G features, using an Ericsson modem.
In fact, in June 2018 Entel and Ericsson had already developed a 5G technology demonstration in Chile with experimental devices, which managed to achieve a record speed in data transfer of more than 24Gbps (the highest achieved so far in a test in South America).
“Ericsson is very proud to be able to present here, for the first time in Latin America, a commercial application of 5G, demonstrating in practice the world of new possibilities that the fifth generation of mobile connectivity will bring to society in general. The technological alliance that we have maintained with Entel for more than two decades and the common focus of the two companies looking at the development of the country were key elements for the success of this initiative, based on the solid experience that Ericsson has added with 5G deployments in different parts of the world - of the 12 commercial 5G networks already deployed, 9 use Ericsson technology” said Eduardo Ricotta, President of Ericsson for the Southern Cone of Latin America.
“We are proud to work with Entel Chile and Ericsson in demonstrating the readiness and capabilities of 5G technology. We are excited to contribute to this 5G demonstration, conducted in an open location similar to a production space, and connecting to a test smartphone equipped with the Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ X50 5G modem and antenna modules already integrated with radio frequency (RF) transceivers, RF interface and antennas. Technologies already commercially available by Qualcomm and already confirmed by several mobile device manufacturers. These demonstrations are key to quickly prepare for the arrival of 5G services that our customers expect” said Rafael Steinhauser, president of Qualcomm Latin America..
According to the most recent Ericsson Mobility Report, North America is expected to lead 5G adoption, as major operators have been working on commercial launches since late 2018. Globally, it projects accelerated 5G adoption starting in 2020.
Like previous wireless access technologies, 5G is expected to be deployed first in dense urban areas with enhanced mobile broadband and fixed wireless access, which will be the first commercial uses. Other deployments will be in industries such as automotive, manufacturing, utilities and healthcare, as demonstrated today.
The activity also showcased a smartphone that will operate with this technology and is already available, the Samsung Galaxy S10 5G.
“5G is a today’s reality. That’s why Samsung Electronics as a leading manufacturer launched this year the Galaxy S10 5G, a smartphone that puts the full power and speed of the 5G network in people’s hands. Today it is connected in the United States and South Korea. As part of the industry, we want it to soon be used in more territories, such as Chile” said Luis Garcés, Vice President of Samsung Electronics Chile.
