• The physical digital library, the first of its kind in Latin America, aims to help reduce the gaps in access to reading among the residents of the municipality of Independencia, promoting reading and culture through technology. The initiative was made possible thanks to an alliance between Dibam, the Municipality of Independencia, through its Pablo Neruda Public Library, and Entel.

This morning, the first physical digital library was inaugurated in Independencia. The ceremony was attended by the Secretary of Telecommunications, Pedro Huichalaf; the Intendant of the Metropolitan Region, Claudio Orrego; the Senator of Santiago Poniente, Andrés Allamand; the Manager of Regulation and Corporate Affairs of Entel, Manuel Araya; the Mayor of Independencia, Gonzalo Durán; and the Director of the Department of Libraries, Archives and Museums (Dibam), Ángel Cabeza.

The Physical Digital Library is an innovative project. It offers the same services as a traditional library, but takes advantage of digital resources. In addition to providing tablets with access to the Digital Public Library application - with more than 12,000 titles - activities related to reading and culture will be carried out in this space. For example, there will be storytelling activities through videoconferencing and reading clubs through social networks, among others.

In addition, it should be noted that the project demonstrates that, with digital resources, we can now think of replicating libraries of this type. They don’t require large investments in infrastructure, but rather allocate these resources to the provision of books and services.

“The lending library that was born today fulfills the objective that we have set as Dibam to guarantee reading as a social right for everyone, overcoming geographical barriers and providing a free and quality public service”, said the director of Dibam, Ángel Cabeza.

The mayor of Independencia, Gonzalo Durán, said “As a municipality, it is essential to adapt to new technologies. This initiative allows us to provide our neighbors with new platforms to facilitate equal access to education by promoting reading and culture in general”.

Antonio Büchi, CEO of Entel, commented: “As a company, we are motivated to contribute to the development of the country and to bridge the digital divide, and to this end we have carried out important connectivity projects. For this reason, the inauguration of this space fills us with pride, as it will allow people to connect with culture, education and technology in a very entertaining way”.

Thanks to an agreement between Dibam, the Municipality of Independencia, through its Pablo Neruda Public Library, and Entel, the first physical space of the Digital Public Library in Chile has been formalized, located in Hacienda Montalbán 1810, Independencia. his joint work demonstrates the importance of collaborating between public and private institutions, which ultimately affects the welfare of the community.
