Everything is ready for the New Year’s Eve celebration at the Entel Tower. More than half a million people are expected on 31 December to witness the largest fireworks display in the capital, with the highest number of fireworks per square meter in the country.
Everyone who arrives at Entel Tower for the 24th edition of the New Year’s Eve celebrations will be able to enjoy a free music and dance show from 8pm, as well as the most memorable moment of the night, when the 17-minute fireworks display to welcome 2016 begins.
“The turn of the year is always a milestone, an opportunity to start anew, full of energy with family and friends, and the show that Entel has prepared aims to do just that: start the year in the best possible way, connecting people with their loved ones, their friends and the city. We are waiting for all of you to celebrate the arrival of 2016 together,” said Rodrigo Solar, Entel’s Corporate Marketing Manager.
Meanwhile, the Mayor of the Metropolitan Region, Claudio Orrego, said that “no measure is enough. We call on people to work together, to have a spirit of self-sufficiency and co-responsibility. The Carabineros will have 1,500 police officers to guard the entire city of Santiago. The priority is that this is a celebration to welcome the New Year”.
For her part, the Mayoress of Santiago, Carolina Tohá, emphasized the importance of self-care for those present and called on people to take care of the environment. “We invite you to have a good time and welcome the New Year with joy and responsibility. We take this opportunity to reiterate the call to keep the community clean. We must not forget that the efforts of the workers of the municipal cleaning department do not justify people throwing rubbish on the ground in the middle of the celebrations. We will have a special team of around 150 people, including sweepers, garbage truck drivers, loaders, supervisors and inspectors, who will be on duty in Alameda and the surrounding streets from 1am. It’s everyone’s job to contribute to the clean-up and start 2016 with a clean Santiago,” she stressed.
Like last year’s artistic show, the stage will be set up in the central avenue of the Alameda, at the corner of Dieciocho Street. The event will be hosted by the actress Paty López and the journalist Francisco Saavedra, while the singers Américo and Rigeo will be in charge of getting everyone dancing with a show created especially for the occasion.
Starting at midnight and lasting 17 minutes, 16.5 tons of fireworks will be launched, reaching heights of up to 350 meters and visible from different parts of Santiago.
This year there will be a greater number of pyrotechnic shots - more than 15,000 - which will make the show even more spectacular and intense. Another big novelty this year is that the Entel Tower will be dressed in white, giving the impression that it is disappearing for a moment to give all the focus to the fireworks that will light up the sky.
Some recommendations
To ensure that the event goes off safely and in the best possible way, there will be the support of the Carabineros and a security quadrant bounded to the north by Agustinas, to the south by Tarapacá, to the west by Tucapel Jiménez/Dieciocho and to the east by Morandé/Zenteno. Cars are kept out of this quadrant. For this reason, participants are advised to use public transport to get to the Entel Tower area.
A good alternative is the metro. On Wednesday 31 December, line 1 will be extended until 02:00 in the early hours of 1 January. In the same way, Metro de Santiago will bring forward the supply of rush hour trains on Lines 1 and 5 from 11:00.
On Line 2, more trains will run between 11:40 and 18:00. On Line 4, Metro will run longer trains throughout the day.
As far as ticket offices are concerned, there will be extra staff at the ticket offices from midday on 31 December. The stations República, Los Héroes, Universidad de Chile and Santa Lucía will have a special ticket office service until 02:00 in the morning.
For the rest of the stations on Line 1, the ticket offices will close at 23:00, so passengers should load their Bip cards in advance or use the self-service machines.
Matías Salazar, the Metropolitan Region’s Councilor for Transport and Telecommunications, points out that “people attending the New Year’s Eve party at the Entel Tower are advised to check the contingency plan implemented by Transantiago at www.transantiago.cl, plan their journey and prefer public transport. If you are travelling in a private vehicle, please respect the special traffic plan that has been prepared for this party and park in authorized places so that residents can move around easily”.
It is also recommended that families stay together at all times, especially to prevent children from getting lost. To support this, there will be two stands, one at Dieciocho and Alameda streets and the other at Arturo Prat and Alameda streets, where 20,000 bracelets will be distributed to children taking part in the event. The wristbands will have the names and contact numbers of the parents in case the children get lost. The stands set up to distribute the wristbands will also serve as meeting points.
Finally, those who arrive early at the Entel Tower to watch the show on 31 December are advised to bring sunscreen and water.
