As part of its sustainability strategy, Entel is only one month away from beginning the gradual switch-off of its 2G network, which accounts for less than 1% of the mobile connections made on the company’s networks. This advance will allow a more efficient use of the spectrum, promoting more modern technologies, such as 3G, 4G and 5G, networks of better quality, faster and that allow data transmission.
Along these lines, the company has been developing a plan for more than a year to replace 2G equipment for customers prioritized by cell phones that do connect to 3G and 4G networks. This plan has been successfully implemented in different parts of the country, in the regions of Atacama, Coquimbo, Ñuble, Biobío, Los Ríos, Los Lagos, Aysén, Magallanes and now in the Metropolitan Region.
In this context, together with the Mayor of Renca, Claudio Castro, and the Undersecretary of Telecommunications, Claudio Araya, Entel began the plan to replace 2G devices for the customers of that municipality with the aim of generating the least possible impact on their connectivity.
“We do not want anyone to be left behind, on the contrary, a fundamental pillar of our sustainability strategy is to work on reducing the different dimensions of the digital divide in the country. The 2G switch-off allows us to free up physical space in our towers and reduce our carbon footprint to make way for the installation of 4G and 5G, which are the current and future technologies, and which are also much more efficient in the use of energy. At the same time, Entel’s decision is to actively include the elderly segment in remote areas in the priority replacement so that they are not left behind in the digitalization process”, said Entel’s Sustainability and Communications Manager, Francisca Florenzano.
The switch-off of the network will begin gradually in July of this year, in the regions of Arica and Parinacota, Tarapacá, Antofagasta and Atacama, and then it will be expanded to the rest of the country. It is important to highlight that the 2G signal will not be switch-off in those areas where there are no other available networks, but only in those where there are more modern networks within reach.
The Undersecretary of Telecommunications, Claudio Araya, emphasized that “the technological replacement process must include everyone. We value this initiative, since it allows our senior citizens not to lose connectivity while 2G networks are being switched-off. As Subtel we will continue to monitor that the technological replacement processes are developed incorporating all people”.
“From the Municipality we have set the transformation of Renca as our goal. That is what we want for all our neighbors, and digital transformation is also part of that challenge. Since 2018, we have been working with Entel on different initiatives, first improving connectivity in Renca, then we became the first municipality with 5G network, and now we have various programs to shorten the digital divide, especially in our seniors. Therefore, today it is very good news that 64 neighbors can receive new and better phones for free, and not be left behind when the total disconnection of the 2G network takes place”, mentioned the mayor of Renca, Claudio Castro.
“This decision to migrate to new technologies is a reality not only in Chile, but also worldwide. There are numerous countries that, since 2010, have already carried out or initiated the switch-off of their 2G network. This only leads us to continue connecting all people quickly and efficiently”, said Entel’s Sustainability and Communications Manager, Francisca Florenzano.
In the case of home customers who are affected by this switch-off, the technology and telecommunications company also offers them a free replacement equipment very similar to the one they currently have, through two modalities: sending the device by delivery or referral to the nearest Entel store so that they can come to make the change.
So far, more than 15 thousand devices have been exchanged to all 2G users, reaching more than 130 municipalities, while there are 24 thousand phones in stock to be distributed among priority groups that require the replacement of their device.
Finally, Entel is calling on those who know elderly people in their close circle to check the devices of their family members to see if they could be left without connectivity. This can be examined at entel.cl/2g or they can call 103 to check it, in order to opt for one of the more than 20 thousand devices in stock for replacement among the priority groups.
