With the aim of further strengthening its service offering for the Home segment, Entel announced that its high-speed Fixed Wireless Broadband service will now be deployed over the 3500 MHz band, seeking to facilitate internet access to homes located in areas where the penetration of this service is low or where there are no other alternatives in terms of supply.
The technical-commercial presentation took place this morning in the Renca square and was attended by the Undersecretary of Telecommunications, Rodrigo Ramírez, and the mayor of the municipality, Claudio Castro, together with Entel’s Manager of Regulation and Corporate Affairs, Manuel Araya, the president of Ericsson South America, Nicolás Brancoli, and representatives of the community.
The project contemplates an investment of close to US$40 million, and consists of the installation of 474 wireless base stations, which will gradually come into operation in different regions of the country during 2018. With this, it is estimated that around one million homes will be able to access a new high-speed wireless home internet service, with Massive Mimo technology.
Entel’s Manager of Regulation and Corporate Affairs, Manuel Araya, said that “this project has a dual purpose. On the one hand, the home segment is one of our strategic growth lines for the coming years, and on the other hand, this project is also consistent with our mission as a company, to make everyone live better connected. We know that Internet access is fundamental in this task and with the offer of high-speed Fixed Wireless Broadband over the 3,500 MHz band we will contribute to democratize and expand the offer of this service in the country”.
Meanwhile, the Undersecretary of Telecommunications, Rodrigo Ramírez, said that “for a long time we stood by and watched as some parts of the country enjoyed access to high quality and high speed Internet services, while other neighborhoods were described as not living in places suitable for receiving similar services. Correcting this inequality, expanding offers, promoting new coverage and improving the quality of service is a permanent challenge for our industry. This is done with vocation and innovation, using talent and available resources to close these gaps. Today in Renca we see that it is possible. Entel through this fixed wireless Internet service breaks these barriers, innovating with this technology, making good use of the spectrum, involving the municipal management in the correct deployment of the infrastructure and bringing citizens closer to the use of Internet services today vital for the best social performance”.
To access the Fixed Wireless Broadband service over the 3500 MHz band, the main requirement is to verify that the address has access feasibility to the network that is currently being deployed.
Regarding the project, the Mayor of Renca, Claudio Castro said that “Internet is a fundamental tool, recognized as a human right since 2011 by the UN. This project that Entel is presenting us today comes to settle a national debt with areas that incomprehensibly still do not have access to this service. From the local level we must challenge and push this type of innovation, since the important thing is to democratize internet access for our neighbors and thus provide better opportunities for everyone. The fact that Renca is the first area in the country to have access to this type of service shows that we continue working to be at the forefront of opportunities that provide our municipality with a better quality of life.”
It should be noted that Entel selected Ericsson as the provider of the new LTE-TDD radio access network in the 3500 MHz band, including the deployment of the new Massive MiMo technology.
Regarding this, the president of Ericsson South America, Nicolás Brancoli, commented that “Ericsson has been Entel’s strategic partner for more than 20 years. With a great partnership already established, we are honored to be able to support Entel in this new challenge. Utilizing our latest LTE TDD technology, Entel enhances its leadership by improving the user experience for customers in Chile”.
As it is a totally wireless alternative, it is not necessary to install the wiring of fixed Internet services, nor visits from technicians for installation. It is only necessary to have an electrical connection and the user can install it directly.
