With the commitment to contribute to the circular economy and reduce the digital gap through reuse, the campaign and tour “Reutiliza por Chile” (in English Re-use for Chile”), promoted by Entel, Kyklos and the Centro Inclusivo de Reciclaje (in English “Inclusive Recycling Center”) (CiR), exceeded the expected target of 10 thousand devices, by collecting more than 14 thousand electronic devices in disuse (6 thousand more than the previous year), after its tour through the north, center and south of the country, during 2023.
In this way, 8,327 cell phones, 2,568 CPUs, 2,306 notebooks and 871 tablets were collected, which after an exhaustive review, their useful parts gave life to 1,100 new refurbished devices, which after being checked for optimal operation, were delivered to communities and schools in vulnerable contexts.
Such is the case of the Republic of Croatia School, which thanks to the work of this campaign, inaugurated a computer room with 50 notebooks for the students, in a ceremony that brought together various authorities and members of the student community.
During the activity, the Director of Public Affairs and Institutional Relations of Entel, Claudio Anabalón, said that “we are very happy to be in Iquique to make a nice closing of what was Reutiliza por Chile, during 2023, a program that allows us to bring the opportunities of technology to those who need it most”.
For his part, the General Manager of Kyklos, Diego Echeñique, mentioned that “through this program, together with Entel, we take on environmental and social challenges, because the refurbished devices allows us to reduce inequalities and the digital gap, since in 2023 alone we delivered more than 1,000 devices to students in different parts of the country”.
Meanwhile, the Secretary General of the Corporación Social de Iquique (in English “Social Development Corporation of Iquique”) (CORMUDESI), emphasized that “this is a very valuable contribution for the students of the Republic of Croatia School, as it is a boost for their training and digital skills”.
An initiative valued by the educational community
Together with the students themselves, who were able to see their new computer room, the Executive Director of the Servicio Local de Educación Pública (in Englilsh “Local Public Education Service”) (SLEP) of Iquique, Najle Majluf, emphasized that “we are very pleased to receive these computers, which complement the educational and technological spaces, and which we are sure will enhance the learning of more than seven hundred students. Our educational institution has developed its educational project with the collaboration of support networks with public and private institutions, so we are deeply grateful for the initiative that Entel and Kyklos have carried out to make this important donation official”.
In the same sense, the director of the Colegio República de Croacia, Jorge Aracena, said that “this type of public-private alliances strengthen the delivery of a quality educational service. In this sense, we deeply value the effort behind this great initiative”.
About Reutiliza por Chile
In its 2023 version, the campaign visited 56 localities, in a route of more than 17 thousand kilometers, where a truck was receiving electronic devices in disuse. 75% of the trip was made in a 100% electric vehicle, which allowed a reduction of up to five times the environmental impact in CO2 emissions, compared to a combustion vehicle.
The tour began in Arica and continued in Iquique, Antofagasta, Calama, Copiapó, Vallenar, Coquimbo, La Serena, Ovalle, Quillota, Quilpué, Villa Alemana, San Antonio, Santiago, Rancagua, San Fernando, Curicó, Talca, Linares, Chillán, Talcahuano, Concepción, Los Ángeles, Temuco, Villarrica, Valdivia, La Unión, Puerto Aysén, Coyhaique, Chile Chico and Puerto Natales, among others.
It should be noted that Entel and Kyklos will continue working this year 2024 as promoters of this project, which has two main objectives: one, to promote the circular economy through the recycling or restoration of unused electronic devices; and two, to invite people to contribute to digital inclusion through the donation of these devices that, after repair, are given to students in vulnerable contexts.
“Initiatives such as ‘Reutiliza por Chile’ are a concrete example of how Entel connects with our purpose of bringing the possibilities that technology offers. The management of electronic waste is a very serious and complex issue, to which we contribute not only through collection and recycling, but also by evaluating whether the devices can be reconditioned and given to those who need it most. This fills us with pride, because we see that the contribution being made is immense and tangible”, said Entel’s Sustainability and Communications Manager, Francisca Florenzano.
