Three months after officially launching its 5G network, Entel reported that it has already achieved 45% progress in the deployment nationwide. With this, there are already nine regions of the country where the customers of the technology and telecommunications company can enjoy the benefits of this fifth generation mobile technology.
After being awarded spectrum in two macro-bands in the last bidding process for the deployment of 5G in Chile and the authorization of the authority, Entel began to execute in mid-December the US$ 230 million investment plan it committed to deploy this network nationwide, within a maximum period of 2 years, covering urban and rural areas.
To date, 67 communes already have this technology, including Alto Hospicio, Quilpué, Limache, Rancagua, San Fernando, Talca, Concepción, Temuco and several others in Greater Santiago.
“5G is key for us and we want as many people as possible to have access to this technology, so the deployment will incorporate new areas as we continue to advance with the development of this network. It is important to point out that its deployment will be gradual and its development will take several years, given the works and investments required", explained Manuel Araya, Entel’s Manager of Regulation and Corporate Affairs.
Regarding users, the company informed that of the total number of cell phones currently sold, around 40% are compatible with this new technology. This explains why there are already around 400,000 Entel customers with 5G smartphones. And of these, 200,000 have already connected to the network that is deployed and authorized to date.
“We have witnessed that the adoption of different technologies has been increasingly rapid and with 5G it will be no different. People, due to the pandemic and the good state of telecommunications networks in Chile, have become accustomed to being intensive customers in the use of different technologies and demand services that bring them the benefits of these developments”, said Manuel Araya.
In relation to the development of this new technology, the executive assured that the company’s objective is to continue being leaders in the field of technology and telecommunications, also in 5G. “It is important to highlight that we are not starting from scratch. In the case of Entel, this deployment is leveraged on a robust 4G network and important advances in the fiber optic network, which assures us a great initial capillarity for the deployment of the fifth generation network and will allow us to reach different points of the national territory with this new technology", he pointed out.
According to a recent analysis by Opensignal, the deployment of 5G technology worldwide is led by South Korea, which reaches a maximum 5G network download speed of 438 Mbps (megabit per second), followed by Sweden (338 Mbps) and the United Arab Emirates (319 Mbps). With the report data, it is concluded that the 5G Entel network is positioned above the 5G networks of countries such as Finland, Portugal, Israel, Spain, United States, Canada, among others.
How to access the 5G network
Currently, Samsung, Xiaomi, Motorola, Vivo and Oppo have handsets that can access 5G. In addition, during the first week of February, the software was enabled for the more than 100,000 Entel customers who have iPhone models compatible with this technology. This is the most important Apple cell phone user base in our country.
Details on the specific models of each brand can be reviewed atentel.cl/5g. This is relevant, since only the enabled devices that are published on the company’s website, where you can also find information about the communes and areas that have 5G, will be able to connect to Entel’s network.
Thus, the only requirements to access Entel’s 5G network are to be a customer of the company, have a compatible device and be in areas that have coverage for this new technology.
If a customer buys a device or carries one of the compatible and enabled models, within 24 hours -after entering the chip in the phone- the 5G service will be automatically activated. The company points out that a practical tip for accessing the network is to select 5G as the preferred network in the mobile data settings of the cell phone.
An additional recommendation is that there will be people who will need to update the software on their devices to make use of 5G. There is a group of customers whose devices will be updated automatically and another group that will have to do it manually. The latter will receive a welcome message with an invitation to update the carrier bundle, which will allow them to activate 5G, which will be available 24 hours after the update.
