First company to reach this milestone:

• The 4G+ network, with LTE-Advanced Carrier Aggregation technology, allows to increase the browsing speed and practically double it regarding what is obtained with 4G alone, thanks to the fact that it combines the 2,600 MHz and 700 MHz bands.

Entel opened this noon the 700 MHz band nationwide, which also has 4G+ technology (LTE - Advanced Carrier Aggregation), making it the first company to achieve national coverage with this modern network. The term set forth in the bidding conditions to complete this project was next September and until yesterday the service was only available in Regions I, II, V, VI, VIII and RM.

The 4G+ technology allows to increase the navigation speed and practically double it regarding what is obtained with 4G only, since it combines the 2,600 MHz and 700 MHz bands. Entel is the first telecommunications company in the country to offer access to this technology, which is now available in all regions of Chile.

The national launch was held in the city of Talca, in the Maule Region, and was attended by the Undersecretary of Telecommunications, Rodrigo Ramírez, and the Seremi of Transport and Telecommunications, Patricia Miranda, as well as Entel executives.

According to Entel’s Manager of Regulation and Corporate Affairs, Manuel Araya, the telecommunications company was awarded Block B, which was the one with the largest spectrum (30 MHz), in the tender held by the government for the development of this network. As a result, it now has the most extensive and powerful 4G network at national level, thanks to a total investment of US$ 100 million for the installation of 660 4G stations throughout Chile.“This network improves the connectivity experience, in mobile data services and when using advanced applications, which implies a great contribution to the country’s development,” he emphasized.

[

“Our commitment is to bring connectivity to people no matter how far away they live, and we reaffirm this commitment by launching Entel’s 4G+ network throughout the national territory, so that inhabitants from Arica to Punta Arenas can access the best technology in terms of connectivity. We seek to achieve this nationwide coverage as soon as possible, as we know how important it is to develop infrastructure to meet the connectivity needs of Chileans” , explained Araya.

[

Meanwhile, the Undersecretary of Telecommunications pointed out that, “this implementation shows the commitment of our Undersecretary and the mobile operators to make state-of-the-art technology available to Chileans. This makes possible both an improvement in the experience among users who today already enjoy 4G connectivity, but also involves the deployment of voice and data service in isolated locations through the compensation model that the State has promoted in recent tenders. All Chileans benefit from these technological implementations”.

Since its installation, the 4G network has managed to capture around 40% of the data traffic in the regions where the 700 MHz band was already operational, a figure that is expected to continue to grow thanks to the increase in the number of more modern devices in the hands of customers.

Entel is the leader in the 4G segment. As of December 2016 it had more than two million users with that service, and according to the latest Sector Statistics report of the Undersecretariat of Telecommunications, as of September last year, it had 33% of 4G customers.

Manuel Araya detailed that, of the total number of phones in Entel’s customer base, more than 70% are already smartphones and according to the latest public data delivered by the company, they have more than 800 thousand users with smartphones that support 4G in the 700 MHz band and that could benefit from a significantly superior experience.

Regarding the devices compatible with LTE-Advanced Carrier Aggregation, the executive explained that, initially, about 220 thousand Entel users already have access to this technology, highlighting that this corresponds to more than seven times the 4G subscribers with which they launched their network on the 2,600 MHz band in March 2014, when they were already leading in the implementation of this technology. For this reason, the company projects a significant penetration of 4G+ in its customer base.
