Assessment after mega sporting event:

The reinforcement of the fourth and fifth generation mobile networks in the different venues of Santiago 2023 has yielded positive results.

Connectivity expectations for the Parapan American Games are also high. Today, the 2,000 chips for athletes with unlimited gigabytes and minutes, valid for one month, are being delivered at the Pan American Village.

The Santiago 2023 Pan American Games came to an end and, although many already miss Fiu, the mega sporting event left some very good news. In addition to the historic record number of medals for Team Chile and the number of spectators in the different disciplines, the balance of 4G and 5G connectivity during the competition is also very positive and was made possible thanks to Entel’s reinforcement of its network in the different venues.

Between October 20 and November 5, more than 1.2 million attendees were able to surf the Internet and communicate through 4G and 5G technologies of the 101 additional sites deployed by the company to improve coverage in the different venues, deployed in the Metropolitan, Valparaíso, O’Higgins and Biobío regions.

According to Entel’s analysis, during the event, an average of 22 thousand people used its 4G network daily at the different sites and 4 thousand customers connected to 5G, which in total “trafficked” 590 terabytes (TB). This, with a user browsing experience (average upload and download speed) of 5.31 megabits per second (Mbps) in the case of 4G connections and 123.72 Mbps for those who connected to the 5G network.

To understand the magnitude of these figures, in an event such as Lollapalooza around 5TB per day is trafficked and in the Pan American Games the average was 34.7 TB per day, which showed the importance of having a first class mobile network in all venues. In fact, in the National Stadium complex alone, where the largest number of competitions were concentrated (18 different sports), data usage reached a record of 127TB.

“Every year we reinforce coverage in approximately 80 massive events, such as the Viña Festival, Lollapalooza and all the mega-events sponsored by Entel, and the Pan American and Parapan American Games have been, without a doubt, the most important challenge we have faced. The good news is that it far exceeded our expectations and we were able to deliver a first-class mobile experience to the public, to the athletes who connected with our chips, coaches and workers who made this sporting event possible”, says Luis Uribe, Entel Networks Division Manager.

Projections for the Parapan American Games

But the excitement and sporting expectation does not diminish, and the technology and telecommunications company will also be present in the second stage of the Santiago 2023 Games: the Parapan American Games. In addition to the reinforcement of the 4G and 5G networks in the venues where the competition will take place, the para-athletes will also receive around 2,000 free recycled plastic chips with unlimited gigabytes and minutes, valid for one month, which will be delivered at the Pan American Village starting this Monday, November 13.

The Parapan American Games will begin next Friday, November 17 and will end on November 26. A total of 18 disciplines will be disputed in eight communes of the Metropolitan Region.
