World Environment Day

More than 80% of Entel’s SIM cards are made from recycled materials. In addition, it saves more than 154 million sheets of paper by sending electronic ballots to its mobile service customers.

World Environment Day has been commemorated every June 5 for 50 years with the aim of raising awareness and sensitizing society. The aim is to promote actions to reduce pollution.

It is clear that a challenge of this magnitude must be addressed by all actors, public entities, companies and civil society, who must take charge and reduce their impact on the planet.

In the case of Entel, it has had an Environmental Policy for three years, under which all its efforts in this area are designed and coordinated, and works every day in the implementation of various initiatives to continue on the path of sustainable development.

“Our commitment to sustainability implies addressing it in all its dimensions, so we strongly consider the social, corporate governance and environmental areas in our value creation model and processes. At Entel this implies addressing energy efficiency, on the one hand, and the responsible management of waste generated throughout our value chain,”, said Jimena del Valle, Entel’s Director of Sustainability and Environment.

An example of the latter is the work being done to promote electronic recycling. As part of the Reutiliza por Chile campaign (in English “Re-use for Chile”), which has been traveling the country since 2021, collecting cell phones, tablets, computers, CPUs and accessories in disuse, to repair them and deliver them to schools in vulnerable contexts. And those that cannot be repaired are recycled. In its 2022 version, it managed to collect more than 30 tons of electronic devices, which made possible a donation of more than 1,000 refurbished devices benefiting educational institutions. The target for 2023 is to visit 56 locations, from Arica to Punta Arenas, and recover at least ten thousand devices.

In addition, Entel was the first telecommunications company to offer recycled plastic SIM cards in Chile and currently more than 80% of Entel SIM cards are made from recycled materials, which come from various sources such as disused refrigerators. In addition, their size corresponds to half that of a standard chip, which generates less waste and a reduction in pollution.

In addition, 99.6% of mobile service customers receive their bills by mail, which has saved more than 154 million sheets of paper annually.

Entel has also carried out a series of campaigns in social networks and activations in schools, in alliance with Kyklos. In 2022 alone, 160 educational establishments were called upon to carry out 1,098 face-to-face activities on environmental awareness, with the participation of 29,460 students.

And as Jimena Del Valle pointed out, Entel’s Energy Policy implements initiatives that promote the efficient use of energy in the activities inherent to its business. In addition, in some cases, electricity consumption comes from renewable sources (solar and wind) which currently reaches 244.87 MWh. It already has 136 antennas powered by solar energy and 19 by wind energy.

“Our efforts seek to improve environmental performance as a company, with initiatives in electronic waste management, increased consumption of renewable energy, energy efficiency initiatives and circular economy. We can all contribute to promoting change and making a difference,”, said Jimena del Valle.
