With the announcement of the emblematic “Blue Line”, a blue marking that indicates the exact distance of 42.195 kilometers that the athletes will run, the biggest sports festival in Chile was kicked off.

Registration will open on October 3 for the three distances of the race: 10, 21 and 42 kilometers.

Today, in the Plaza de la Cultura, was the official start of the Entel Marathon of Santiago 2017, an emblematic sporting event that will bring together thousands of runners in the streets of the city next Sunday, April 2.

The start was marked by the announcement of the “Blue Line”, a blue marking painted or placed on the road that indicates the exact distance of the 42.195 kilometers that the marathoners will have to run. This marking is a hallmark of major marathons around the world, including those in the United States, Europe and Australia.

“The initiative is part of a constant search to meet the expectations of the thousands of Chilean and foreign runners who have participated in this event for the last 10 years, and to integrate the city of Santiago as an important part of its development”, explained Fernando Jamarne, president of MDS Corporation.

For his part, Carlos Rodríguez, Entel’s Innovation Manager, said: “As is our tradition year after year, we will have this sports festival that calls on all Chileans to give their best for 42, 21 and 10 kilometers. We know that it is a very demanding challenge, as each runner is trying to fulfill their dreams, regardless of the time they set. As a company, we appreciate this effort and hope that everyone will be a hero for a day when they cross the finish line.”

Erika Olivera opens registration

The recent Olympic flag bearer, who holds the world record for being the first woman to finish five different marathons at the Olympic Games, was responsible for announcing that registration for the 10, 21 and 42-kilometer categories will open on October 3. Also launched a countdown that will be projected on the screens of the Entel Tower starting today.

About the Blue Line

The “Blue Line” is a distinctive mark painted or placed on the streets where a marathon takes place. It can be a continuous line or a segmented line, and its purpose is to mark the exact route that marathoners must follow to complete the 42.195 km race. It is therefore a guide and the fastest and most efficient way to reach the finish line, avoiding detours and extra turns.

Why is it blue and not another color? The rule of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) is that it should not be confused with road markings, and traditionally it has been painted blue, becoming a hallmark of the great marathons of the world, such as those held in the United States (New York, Chicago, Boston, etc.), Europe (Berlin, Paris, London, etc.) and Australia, in the Olympic marathon of the year 2000.

This temporary marking, which usually disappears with the same rubbing of the vehicles, is usually done the day and/or night before the event, in compliance with strict measurement and safety rules: the official calculation of the race must be respected and it must be painted or glued (if a thermoplastic material is used) with the approval of the authorities.
