A radical change in their quality of life. This is how thousands of Chileans in remote areas of the country, to whom Entel has brought connectivity in recent years, have described the dream of being able to talk on a mobile phone or connect to the Internet from their homes for the first time. This will be the experience of the 85,000 people who live in the 549 rural or isolated communities to which the company will provide connectivity in the second phase of its “Conectando Chile” (in English “Connecting Chile”) program. This program was created as part of the company’s investment commitments for the development of its 700 MHz network.
The first phase, which benefited 45 thousand people in 181 municipalities, was carried out as part of the 2,600 MHz network expansion project.
The second phase was inaugurated in the stadium of the town of San Pedro de Alcántara, in the municipality of Paredones, in the O’Higgins region, in the presence of the Minister of Transport and Telecommunications, Andrés Gómez-Lobo, the Undersecretary of Telecommunications, Pedro Huichalaf, the Mayor of Paredones, Jorge Sammy Ormazábal, and Entel’s Manager of Regulation and Corporate Affairs, Manuel Araya, as well as representatives of the local community.
San Pedro de Alcántara es una de las 17 comunidades que conectará Entel en la Región de O’Higgins, en las que viven en torno a 3.700 personas.
On this occasion, Entel’s Manager of Regulatory and Corporate Affairs, Manuel Araya, said that “we are very proud to launch this second phase of our “Conectando Chile” program, as it is a new and important step in our commitment to work towards closing the digital divide. Thanks to this project, thousands of Chileans, no matter where they live, will have access to technology and will not have to travel to urban centers to access mobile telephony and Internet services, which will have a positive impact on their quality of life”.
Manuel Araya said that the second phase of the “Conectando Chile” program will provide connectivity to 549 rural or isolated communities, as well as 212 schools throughout the country, including seven in the O’Higgins region, with a total investment of approximately US$170 million.
“Initiatives such as these allow us to make progress in our mission to ensure that people are better connected and to contribute to the development of communities and the improvement of people’s quality of life in a world where technology brings us closer and makes us more equal,”Araya emphasized.
