Entel took an important step in the deployment of 4G+ nationwide. Today it launched in the Biobío Region its 4G network in the 700 MHz band, the most modern in Latin America, as it will also have LTE-Advanced Carrier Aggregation technology.
This will allow to increase the browsing speed and practically double it regarding the one obtained with 4G alone, since it combines the 2,600 and 700 MHz bands. In addition, it offers an omnipresent browsing experience -both in open and closed spaces-, which represents a major technological leap in terms of user satisfaction.
Thus, Entel consolidates its position as the telecommunications company that has made the most progress in the deployment of 4G+ in the country. In addition to Biobío, it has already launched it in the Metropolitan, Valparaíso, Tarapacá, Antofagasta and O’Higgins regions, delivering this technology to more than 70% of the country’s population.
The launching event was held at the Mitrinco events center and was attended by the Undersecretary of Telecommunications, Rodrigo Ramírez, the Intendant of the Biobío Region, Rodrigo Díaz, the Seremi of Transportation and Telecommunications of the Biobío Region, César Arriagada, and Entel’s Manager of Regulation and Corporate Affairs, Manuel Araya.
According to Manuel Araya, the project in the Biobío Region is one of the company’s most important nationwide, with an investment of US$15 million and the installation of 99 4G stations, which will enable to improve the experience in mobile data services in terms of applications and connectivity, contributing to the development of the region.
“We understand that it is of utmost importance to reach the whole country with this technology as soon as possible, and we are very pleased to be able to launch it soon in the Biobío Region. We are moving fast so that our clients can live the best 4G experience,”, explained Araya.
According to the executive, since its deployment, the 4G+ network has managed to capture between 20% and 25% of data traffic in the regions where it is already operational, a figure that is expected to continue to grow along with the increase in the number of more modern devices in the hands of the customers.
Meanwhile, the Undersecretary of Telecommunications, Rodrigo Ramírez, said that “the approach to new technologies is still an abstract for many Chileans. It is something that is discussed in the big capital and this type of event basically seeks to fulfill three promises: to connect, contact and integrate. In other words, to bring new technologies closer, but not only that, but also the services they can provide in daily life, and that is what we are demonstrating with the new 4G+ network.”
Entel is the leader in the 4G segment. It already has 1.6 million users with this service, and according to the latest Sector Statistics report of the Undersecretary of Telecommunications, as of June of this year it has 39% of the postpaid market and 37% of 4G customers.
Manuel Araya also detailed that, of the total number of phones in Entel’s customer base, more than 70% are already smartphones, and according to the latest public data provided by the company, it has more than 800 thousand users with smartphones that support 4G in the 700 MHz band and that could benefit from a significantly superior experience.
Regarding the teams compatible with LTE-Advanced Carrier Aggregation, the executive explained that initially about 200 thousand Entel users will have access to this technology, noting that this figure is more than 7 times the 4G subscribers with which they launched their network on the 2,600 MHz band in March 2014, when they were already leaders in this technology. For this reason the company projects a significant penetration of 4G+, in its customer base.
