It is the first telecommunications company in the country to offer its customers 4G services with LTE-Advanced Carrier Aggregation technology.

In addition, it is working to connect 6 isolated locations in the region with 3G technology, so that they can receive voice and mobile Internet services.

Entel is advancing the deployment of its 4G+ network on a regional scale. Today, it launched its 4G network in the 700 MHz band in the Antofagasta region. This network features LTE-Advanced Carrier Aggregation technology, which makes it possible to increase and practically double the speed achieved with 4G LTE alone by combining the 2,600 MHz and 700 MHz bands.

It continues to be the only telecommunications company in the country to provide access to this technology, which has been available in the Metropolitan and Valparaíso regions since May and August, respectively.

Meanwhile, the Intendant of the Antofagasta Region, Valentín Volta Valencia, referred to the incorporation of telephony and mobile Internet through 3G technology in six isolated localities of the region, which will benefit 77 people currently living there: Punta Atala, Costa Caleta el Cobre, Inacalari in Calama, Costa Blanco Encalada and Altamira in Taltal.

He expressed that “within the framework of a government plan through the Ministry of Transport and Telecommunications, together with the telecommunications companies, we have tried to provide maximum coverage, both in telephony and in mobile Internet access, a project that began in the Metropolitan Region and in the Valparaíso Region, and this month it was the turn of our region, where the company Entel will provide coverage. This is very important for us because this technology will allow communication and connectivity in case of accidents, since it will cover communities that do not have this technology today, both for telephony and Internet, such as Caleta Buena in the municipality of Tocopilla, Isla Santa María and Caleta Constitución in the municipality of Antofagasta, and in the case of roads, the routes from Calama to Ollagüe and from Calama to San Pedro de Atacama, which will have this connectivity system”

The inauguration took place in the Andrés Sabella Hall of the Antofagasta Intendancy and was attended by the Intendant of the Antofagasta Region, Valentín Volta, the Regional Secretary of Transportation and Telecommunications, Waldo Valderrama, the Regional Secretary of Government, Víctor Flores, and Entel’s Corporate Affairs Manager, Manuel Araya.

Entel’s Manager of Regulation and Corporate Affairs, Manuel Araya, said, “Our commitment is to bring connectivity to all people so that they can improve their quality of life. We understand that it is of the utmost importance to reach the whole country with this technology as soon as possible, so we are moving quickly and according to a demanding deployment plan for our customers to live the best 4G experience”, explained the executive,

The project in the Antofagasta region is necessary to support the growing trends in the consumption of data services, such as the use of applications like WhatsApp, which is the most used by Entel customers in the Antofagasta region (42%), followed by Google (41%) and Facebook (39%). Applications such as YouTube, Twitter and Instagram are ranked 6th, 10th and 11th respectively. The 4G network with LTE Advanced Carrier Aggregation technology improves the user experience when using applications and contributes to the development of the area.

Entel has 1.6 million users with 4G service, with a market share of 37%, according to the latest report of the Sector Statistics of the Undersecretary of Telecommunications.

Araya also explained that of the total number of phones in Entel’s customer base, more than 85% are already smartphones, and according to the latest public data provided by the company, it has more than 800,000 users with smartphones that support 4G in the 700 MHz band and will be able to benefit from a significantly superior experience.

Regarding the devices compatible with LTE-Advanced Carrier Aggregation, he clarified that initially Entel users who will have access to this technology will be more than 100,000. He recalled that this figure is still more than three times the number of 4G subscribers with which the company launched its network over the 2,600 MHz band in March 2014, when it was already a leader in this technology, and assured that they project a significant penetration of this in the company’s customer base.

Advanced applications

Entel’s Manager of Regulation and Corporate Affairs emphasized that the benefits of implementing the 700 MHz network will go beyond telecommunications.

This technology will mean an improvement in remote medical services or telemedicine, which will benefit enormously as the improved browsing experience will enhance medical consultations through video conferencing and the obtaining of remote medical diagnoses in real time, among others. Likewise, distance learning, teleworking and the implementation of smart cities in Chile will be strengthened, as the technologies associated with these trends will have better performance when 4G operates at full capacity.
