Entel continues to expand its 4G+ network throughout the country. Yesterday, the company launched 4G in the 700 MHz band for the Tarapacá region, bringing LTE-Advanced Carrier Aggregation (4G+) technology to the region’s residents, virtually doubling the connection speed compared to 4G LTE alone. This is achieved by combining the 2,600 MHz and 700 MHz bands to enhance their use and improve the user experience.
It continues to be the only telecommunications company in the country to offer access to the most advanced network in Latin America, which has been available in the Metropolitan and Valparaíso regions since May and August, respectively. This month, the regions of O’Higgins and Antofagasta will be added, bringing the total number of regions with access to this technology to five.
This network offers a ubiquitous navigation experience - both in open and closed spaces - which represents a major technological leap forward and a very important satisfaction for users.
In Iquique, the Undersecretary of Telecommunications, Pedro Huichalaf, said: “For us, it is important that this technology is available throughout the national territory, and in response to this call, Entel is rolling out the 700 network now in Iquique and soon in Antofagasta and the Sixth Region, so we are very happy because this benefit is not only perceived by people who live in Santiago. As a government, we are democratizing access to telecommunications, considering that the latest statistics show that 78 out of 100 Chileans are connected to the Internet, and that more than 80% does it through mobile devices”.
Entel’s regulatory and corporate affairs manager, Manuel Araya, said: “We are committed to bringing connectivity to everyone so they can improve their quality of life. We understand that it is of paramount importance to reach this technology throughout the country as soon as possible, so we are moving quickly and according to a demanding deployment plan so that our customers can live the best 4G experience”.
The project in the Tarapacá region will support the trend of increased consumption of data services, such as the use of applications like WhatsApp, which is the most used by Entel customers in the region (43%), followed by Google (42%) and Facebook (41%). Applications such as YouTube, Twitter and Instagram are ranked 6th, 10th and 11th respectively. The 4G network with LTE Advanced Carrier Aggregation technology improves the user experience when using applications and contributes to the development of the area.
Entel is the leader in this segment, with 1.6 million users with 4G service and a 37% market share, according to the latest Sector Statistics Report of the Undersecretary of Telecommunications.
Manuel Araya also explained that of the total number of handsets in Entel’s customer base, more than 85% are already smartphones, and according to the latest public data provided by the company, it has more than 800,000 users with smartphones that support 4G in the 700 MHz band and will be able to benefit from a much better experience.
Regarding devices compatible with LTE-Advanced Carrier Aggregation, he clarified that initially Entel users with access to this technology will be around 200,000. He recalled that this figure is still more than three times the number of 4G customers with which the company launched its network over the 2,600 MHz band in March 2014, when it was already a leader in this technology, and assured that they project a significant penetration of this in the company’s customer base.
Advanced applications
Entel’s Manager of Regulatory and Corporate Affairs emphasized that the benefits of launching the 700 MHz network go beyond telecommunications. “The early deployment of this network is fundamental to maintaining our technological leadership in the region and the country, as we provide the platform necessary for the development and use of advanced applications.”
For example, this technology will support an improvement in the delivery of remote medical services, or telemedicine, as the improved browsing experience will enhance medical consultations through videoconferencing and the obtaining of medical diagnoses remotely and in real time, among others. Likewise, distance learning, teleworking and the implementation of smart cities in Chile will be strengthened, as the technologies associated with these trends will perform better when 4G is operating at full capacity.
