In a new step to reinforce its commitment to care for the environment and reduce the impact associated with the operation of its business, Entel began to deliver SIM cards made from 100% recycled plastic to those customers who sign an agreement for a new mobile line or those who need to change it. This makes the company the first telecommunications company to offer this model of recycled plastic SIM cards in Chile.
These micro cards, better known as “chip” for cell phones, began to be marketed in 1991 and over the years became indispensable due to their characteristics and ease of use. In a matter of minutes, they allow you to change your cell phone while keeping your phone number. At the beginning they were the size of a credit card, but nowadays we can find a reduced version that does not exceed 13 mm and even digital versions known as eSIM.
Although this mini-processor has a useful life of 5 years on average, its high demand caused that only in 2020 around 20 thousand tons of plastic were used in its manufacture worldwide. This is because today they are no longer used only for cellular devices, but can also be used in smart watches, tablets, portable modems and even household appliances.
The new SIM cards that are now available to customers are certified carbon neutral and forest protection, both regarding their materiality and production process. In addition, they are made from 100% recycled plastic (which avoids using new materials), and are smaller in size, as the SIM card is half the standard size.
“We are very pleased to continue taking concrete steps in our commitment to the circular economy, from which we have built a broad and detailed vision that links the needs of the company with the expectations of society and global guidelines in these matters. In this context, we understand our responsibility to ensure optimal management of the waste we generate throughout our marketing and after-sales chain, which forces us to innovate constantly, and this SIMcard of recycled plastic is a very good example of implementing new alternatives”, said Entel’s Sustainability Director, Jimena del Valle.
The technology and telecommunications company has been working for 8 years in the design and implementation of initiatives aimed at contributing to sustainability, where they have highlighted measures that promote circular economy, through the repair of devices in stores, reuse through the sale of pre-owned equipment (refurbished devices with Entel warranty) and the recycling of electrical and electronic appliances.
