• The project has restored more than 1,000 m2 of green space in the La Chimba sector, north of Antofagasta, benefiting around a thousand residents.

• This is the eleventh “Barrio Feliz” (in English “Happy Neighborhood”) in Chile, which aims to improve public spaces, contribute to the environment and improve the quality of life of local residents.

“We couldn’t walk near this place before. It was a risk for everyone, because for 18 years this space was an abandoned and destroyed skating rink. Today, we are proud to have achieved an important change for this community, especially for our children and grandparents.”

This is how Viviana Molina describes the change in the La Chimba area of Antofagasta. She is one of the thousands of residents of the sector who, from today, will be able to enjoy a renovated environment, thanks to Entel’s “Barrio Feliz” program, an initiative aimed at restoring public spaces in vulnerable sectors through the active participation of residents in the implementation of projects.

The initiative, a joint task between the Municipality of Antofagasta, Entel, the sector’s Neighborhood Council, and the Own Project Foundation, included the recovery of a square of more than 1,000 m2, which aims to contribute to the quality of life of all the families in the sector.

The work plan is based on a methodology that actively involves the neighbors in the design and implementation of this intervention. The neighbors themselves, both children and adults, express their ideas and needs for the construction of this public space in various community meetings.

Entel’s regulatory and corporate affairs manager, Manuel Araya, said: “Contributing to Antofagasta’s first “Happy Neighborhood” reflects our commitment to help Chileans live better connected with their families and also with their immediate environment. Green spaces encourage community life, so we hope that this space will be a place for families to meet and have fun, and that it will improve the quality of life for all neighbors.”

The one in Antofagasta is the eleventh Barrio Feliz to be inaugurated in the country. Communities in Alto Hospicio, Chañaral, Coquimbo, Valparaíso, La Pintana, Renaico, Lautaro, Peñalolén, Puerto Montt and Rancagua already have their own and have been able to enjoy the benefits these renovated spaces bring to their communities.

[

The Mayor of Antofagasta, Karen Rojo, said: “We are grateful for the commitment of Entel and the Fundación Proyecto, who, through the Barrio Feliz program, have contributed to the recovery of this important public space, which will allow us to improve the quality of life of the thousands of residents who live in the La Chimba sector, an area that will be fully recovered by our municipality in the short and medium term.”

[

“We applaud the fact that companies are integrating shared value into their corporate strategies and becoming part of the development and growth of the communities to which they belong.”

[

Meanwhile, Sebastián Cantuarias, Executive Director of the Fundación Proyecto Propio, highlighted the great benefit that this new “Barrio Feliz” will have for the region. “With this project, we have made a great contribution to the social development of La Chimba, which will have a positive impact on the neighborhood and be an impulse for the community leaders and neighbors in general to continue working for a better quality of life.”

With this project, Entel wants to make a contribution from a sustainability perspective, helping to develop and build a friendlier and more harmonious environment for its inhabitants. This transformation is possible thanks to the contributions and savings made by customers who opt to receive their bills by e-mail and recycle unused mobile phones, as well as complementary investments made by the company.
