Only eight months after the publication of the concession decree of its project in the Official Gazette, Entel has begun the implementation of its 4G network in the 700 MHz band, which will also have LTE carrier aggregation technology, which will allow increasing the speed and practically doubling it with respect to that obtained only with 4G LTE.
This makes it the first telecommunications company in the country to provide its customers with a 4G network that offers a ubiquitous browsing experience, both in open and closed spaces, representing a very important technological leap and satisfaction for users in Chile.
The launch event was held at the Telecommunications Plaza of the Entel Tower and was attended by the Minister of Transport and Telecommunications, Andrés Gómez-Lobo, the Undersecretary of Telecommunications, Pedro Huichalaf, Entel’s Manager of Regulation and Corporate Affairs, Manuel Araya, representatives of the technology provider Ericsson and Entel executives.
As reported at the time, in the first phase, more than 200 sites will be activated in the metropolitan area, representing 30% of the total commercial project.
However, Entel’s Manager of Regulation and Corporate Affairs, Manuel Araya, informed that, according to the schedule they are working with, before the end of the year another five regions will have 4G service over 700 MHz band, with LTE carrier aggregation, with which they will have completed 70% of the total technical project.
“Our commitment is to bring connectivity to all people to improve their quality of life, which we reaffirm even more on World Telecommunications Day. We understand that it is of utmost importance to reach the whole country with this technology as soon as possible, so we are moving fast and according to the ambitious deployment plan we have set ourselves, we will enable the service in the Fifth Region next July, in the Eighth Region in August, and in the First, Second and Sixth Regions in September of this year,” , detalló Araya.
The Minister of Transport and Telecommunications, Andrés Gómez-Lobo, said that “the beginning of the use of the 700 MHz band will allow us to introduce improvements in the supply and quality of telecommunications services, increasing the speed of connection and reducing prices to the public. This will keep our country at the forefront in Latin America, as one of the pioneers in the deployment of 4G technology at the national level”.
Meanwhile, the Undersecretary of Telecommunications, Pedro Huichalaf, emphasized that “Chile’s leadership in connectivity is recognized worldwide. The commercial use of the 700 MHz band is a big step for Chile and for telecommunications companies, but it will have direct benefits for consumers in terms of the quality of the services they receive and, through the considerations, connectivity will reach places where it did not exist before”.
Manuel Araya recalled that in the bidding process carried out by the government, Entel was awarded Block B with the largest spectrum (30 MHz), which means that it will have the most extensive and powerful 4G network at the national level and the most advanced in Latin America, with LTE carrier aggregation. Specifically, Entel’s commercial project includes an investment of US$130 million to install 660 4G base stations throughout the country.
“We have very high expectations regarding the impact that this project will have for our customers and for the country, considering the explosive growth of 4G services, which until now have only been provided by the 2,600 MHz network. We are also very optimistic about the future of Entel’s 4G service in terms of the impact this project will have on Entel as a leader in this segment, which, as of March 2016, already had more than 1.2 million users with 4G service, with a 47% share,” , the executive emphasized.
Araya detailed that of the total number of handsets in Entel’s customer base, more than 70% are already smartphones and according to the latest public data provided by the company, they have more than 755,000 users with smartphones that support 4G in the 700 MHz band and that will be able to benefit from a significantly superior experience.
Regarding devices compatible with LTE-Advanced Carrier Aggregation, he clarified that the initial number of Entel users who will have access to this technology will be around 70,000. However, he recalled that this figure is still more than double the number of 4G subscribers with which they launched their network over the 2,600 MHz band in March 2014, when they were already leaders in this technology, and assured that they project a significant penetration of this in the company’s customer base.
“In March, more than 30% of our customers’ connections were 4G. The surprising thing is that this has happened with this technology operating only in the 2,600 MHz band, with all the limitations we know it has. Now that the 4G network also operates in the 700 MHz band, users will have a continuous browsing experience, so the preference for this technology should increase even more,” , said Manuel Araya.
Advanced applications
Entel’s Manager of Regulation and Corporate Affairs emphasized that the benefits of implementing the 700 MHz network will go beyond telecommunications.
“The early deployment of this network is fundamental not only for us as a country to regain technological leadership in the region, but also because we are enabling a platform that is necessary for the development and use of advanced applications. For example, the provision of remote medical services, or telemedicine, will benefit enormously, as the improved navigation experience will enhance medical consultations through videoconferencing and the obtaining of remote medical diagnoses in real time, among others. In addition, distance learning, teleworking and the implementation of smart cities in Chile will be strengthened, as the technologies associated with these trends will perform better when 4G is operating at full capacity,”, aseguró.
These benefits are in addition to the deployment of the second phase of Entel’s Conectando Chile project, which is linked to the mandatory considerations of this project, thanks to which the company will provide telephony and Internet services to 549 rural and remote areas of our country, where more than 85 thousand people live, and to 212 schools throughout the country, with a total investment of around US$170 million.
“In fact, one of the good news we have to share today is that thanks to the progress we have made with the project, we are already able to provide connectivity to 233 of these communities that currently do not have service, which represents 42% of the second phase of the Conectando Chile project,” said Manuel Araya.
He stressed that this is a new and important step in Entel’s commitment to eliminate the connectivity and digital divide in Chile, contributing to the development of communities and improving the quality of life of people, regardless of where they live, “in a world where technology brings us closer and makes us equal”.
