The company highlights the massification and new uses for artificial intelligence, adding new potential in the creative field. It also envisions a future where immersive experiences will gain ground and internet of things hyper connectivity will enable better experiences, new services and improve the quality of life.

The world is not the same as the one we knew two years ago, today there are new ways of working, studying, recreating and living, but do they all have something in common? Yes, their high digital component, reflected in the increase of over 30% in the use of mobile data since 2020. Many of the activities carried out during the pandemic are here to stay and today their use and adoption are on the rise.

As in recent years, technology will continue to evolve apace during 2023, as well as its uses. This is the view of the technology and telecommunications company Entel, which this year provides a summary of the main technological trends that will have an impact worldwide, both at a social and personal level, as well as in different industries.

“Technology is an enabler for the responsible transformation of society and we know that its progress implies new challenges. This forces us to be constantly deepening its impact and value generation, under the premise of increasingly putting people at the core”, says Carmen Gloria Cárcamo, assistant manager of Trends and Projects at Entel.

Here are the main trends for 2023:

  1. Immersive experiences through the development and adoption of technologies such as augmented, virtual and mixed reality, which will further deepen what we have come to know as metaverse. Although it is estimated to be years away from consolidation, thanks to the rapid deployment of 5G and fiber optics in Chile, there are already local developments. In the future, we will see more visors, massification of gadgets and campaigns based on these technologies.

For Cárcamo, these elements will be increasingly present in different industries, allowing the development of solutions that offer value to customers. Telepresence, being in other environments and situations for medical or mining training are just a few examples. Whether for entertainment or for industries, the development of the metaverse will be gradual, but it is happening and it is here to stay.

  2. Artificial Intelligence: during 2023, the ubiquity of Artificial Intelligence will also consolidate, increasing instances and tools we will use, achieving a boom thanks to synergies with automation technologies and the internet of things. But that is not all. Advances in the use of generative AI technologies are foreseen. We will see data and synthetic media, algorithms will collaborate with humans in the generation of art, music, cinema, getting closer in image and capabilities to humans.

The executive stresses that AI will be more visible, powerful and useful. “Until recently, we were satisfied with virtual assistants such as Siri or services such as Shazam; today, however, developments are more visible, such as OpenAI’s Dall-e, which creates images from sentences written in natural language. Or the GPT-3 linguistic engine, which responds to and executes complex requirements and shows what technology is capable of, integrating complex information”.

  3. Internet of things: will experience its best moment and consolidation. The trend of coexisting with smart devices in everyday life, such as speakers, vacuum cleaners, cameras and irrigation systems, will be joined by productive tasks, but with intelligent devices capable of recording data and optimizing processes, which will enable progress towards advanced digital transformation, for example, with Digital Twins. But what will the digital twins make it possible to do? Predictive maintenance, exploring the probability of altering processes, contributing to efficiency, sustainability and savings, as well as providing greater safety to workers performing dangerous tasks.

  4. Blockchain:another trend that will begin to generate discussion and debate will be decentralization and Blockchain. Blockchain, which allows the permanent, immutable and transparent recording of data and transactions, as a more distributed system will make it possible to exchange anything that has value, this time, for less tangible items. What could be transacted? Entel’s assistant manager of trends and projects stresses that it could be bank, notary, property documents, even of court or government origin.

“The proof of trust is delivered in the transaction itself, not through other things, places or people. In other words, it allows us to take care of what we value most, which becomes relevant in an environment that is becoming more and more digital. It is a trend that we will begin to talk about and discuss, in terms of cybersecurity, data protection and digital ethics”, says Cárcamo.

An example of this are smartcontracts, which could mean a breakthrough in the world of work, culture and collaboration, where we will continue to see new ways of working tailored to the post-pandemic world. These include new sets of techno-digital and management skills. In turn, the development of a new culture by organizations adapting to a “new collaborator".

“Each trend will open room for new, equally powerful subtrends, and at Entel we aim to improve people’s quality of life. We also call on people to be aware of the use and information we provide, since with great connectivity comes great responsibility", says Cárcamo.
