In its 60 years of history, the technology and telecommunications company has positioned itself as a key player for the country and is always at the forefront of technology and at the side of the people, to help transform their lives with the help of technology. An example of this is that it is currently the only company in Latin America that has an agreement with Starlink to offer satellite coverage service for its mobile customers.

Under the slogan "A future with history" and as part of the celebration of its 60th anniversary, Entel commemorated at the Longovilo satellite station the 55th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing. A space milestone that is remembered as one of the greatest feats of humanity and which made Chile the only Latin American country to transmit it live, thanks to the technology developed by Entel in the town of Longovilo.

"This is a very symbolic milestone in the history of the company and reflects our spirit of being at the forefront of technology, but also of being ingenious and brave to bring this technology closer to the people. In this case, the satellite reception antenna had to be rotated, outside of the protocol, to take advantage of an opportunity that arose, and thus arrive with the live transmission. We are convinced that the future is built with history, and we will continue to develop all our potential as a company to bring the benefits of technology to all Chileans", explains Entel's general manager, Antonio Büchi.

This milestone in our country was possible thanks to the vision for the future of the government of former President Eduardo Frei Montalva, who inaugurated the space station in 1968 and provided all his support in July 1969, 55 years ago. "Today we celebrate the arrival of man on the moon, Chile was the only country in Latin America to see it thanks to the efforts of professionals and the government that stopped all connections to be able to see that event", recalled Eduardo Frei Ruiz-Tagle, about his father's government.

"In 1968, the first satellite communication teleport in Chile and Latin America was inaugurated by Entel, which allowed the transmission of the space adventure on national television screens in Chile. Something unimaginable last century and that today is a reality in each of our homes: we can see through television what is happening in other parts of the world and beyond thanks to the technology of telecommunication antennas, which today, in this place, are used for satellite communications with extreme areas of the country, such as Puerto Williams or Visviri", said the Minister of Transport and Telecommunications, Juan Carlos Muñoz.

The commemorative activity had as its initial focus a panel called "The connection of the 60's and the satellite revival", an instance in which the importance of the satellite connection was addressed, which offers global coverage, allowing access to internet and communication in remote areas where there is no terrestrial infrastructure, something essential in emergency situations and for transmission services such as TV and radio. The participants in this event were Entel's satellite network expert, Guillermo Cifuentes; the astronomer of the University of Chile, Francisca Contreras; the deputy director of Space Affairs of the FACH, Colonel Hernán Tello; and the head of International Business of the Ministry of Science and Technology, Gonzalo Arenas.

Francisca Contreras, astronomer of the University of Chile and science communicator, pointed out that "technology and science have given us the possibility of achieving milestones that we thought were impossible, such as leaving our planet. Taking advantage of knowledge and new technologies today opens doors to achieve new challenges, such as reaching the Moon and even Mars, expanding the limits of what is known".

Entel was a pioneer in satellite connection in the past and now it has become a protagonist of the future, since it is the only Latin American company to close an agreement with SpaceX, Starlink's operator. This agreement will be operational by the end of this year and will allow the company to connect through the satellite network directly to ordinary cell phones when in remote places or where there is no terrestrial mobile coverage.

The moment in which the human being stepped on lunar soil for the first time was transmitted live in our country thanks to the fact that, a year before (1968), the first satellite communications station in Latin America came into operation in Longovilo, developed by Entel, which meant a fundamental advance for Chile, since it allowed to take it out of geographical isolation and connect it with the rest of the world.

Currently, the ground station continues to support the connectivity of isolated areas -such as Rapa Nui, Puerto Eden, and Antarctica- and localities that cannot be reached with any other type of technology, due to the complexity of their geographical location.
