The activity took place in the town of Victoria, where a 5G connection was made between two communities and a Mapuche prayer was held.
Entel continues to advance in the process of technological transformation and gradual switch-off of its 2G technology. As a first step, it carried out two successful pilot experiences in the regions of Biobío and Aysén, to support the replacement of mobile devices that are only compatible with this technology, and now it will be the turn of a prioritized group of customers in three communes of the Atacama Region: Freirina (November 14), Alto del Carmen (November 15) and Diego de Almagro (November 16).
According to the information, the technology switch-off itself is scheduled for the second half of 2024, but the technology and telecommunications company has already replaced 1,670 cell phones free of charge in the communities of Tomé, Nacimiento, Arauco, Río Ibáñez and Puerto Cisnes, with devices compatible with 3G and 4G technologies.
It is now expected to benefit around 500 customers in the area and then continue in seven communities in the Coquimbo Region, starting on November 21. To qualify for this devices replacement, this plan gives priority to Entel customers (prepaid and subscription) over 70 years of age and who live in rural areas without access to delivery service, as is the case of the mentioned communes. In addition, an information campaign will be carried out to clearly explain to people the benefits of the replacement and the steps to follow.
“In our almost 60 years of history, we have worked to offer Chileans the most robust mobile network in the country, regardless of whether it is a large city, a rural location or even remote places such as Rapa Nui. And over time, our network has evolved along with the different mobile technologies to ensure our customers a first-class connectivity and navigation experience. It is in this process of evolution that next year we will begin the switch-off of 2G technology and the first step is to ensure that all Entel customers have a cell phone compatible with more modern technologies. This is why we will be deployed in the territory, to inform customers and to facilitate this transformation and be a contribution to the people”, said Entel’s Director of Territory and Stakeholders, Patricia Muñoz.
This support plan will be developed from Tuesday, November 14 in the communities of Freirina, Alto del Carmen and Diego de Almagro:
Freirina: Tuesday, November 14 10:00 to 13:00 and 15:00 to 18:00 hrs, in the Hall of the Casa de la Cultura, right in front of the Municipality (1016 O’Higgins Street).
Alto del Carmen: Wednesday, November 15 from 09:00 to 17:15 hrs. at Padre Alonso García with Aníbal Pinto, in front of the Plaza de Armas.
Diego de Almagro:Thursday, November 16 from 10:00 to 13:00 and from 15:00 to 18:00 hrs. at Juan Martínez de Rozas # 1103.
Global trend
The second-generation technology, which began operating 25 years ago, allowed for years to make calls between cell phones and text messaging services. Other devices such as GPS, 2G electric gates, 2G cameras and companies using M2M connections can also be connected.
However, the use of this technology accounts for less than 1% of the mobile connections made in Entel’s networks.
The switch-off of this technology is a global trend, which allows for a more efficient and effective use of the spectrum (radioelectric space that companies such as Entel require to provide services), to go deeper into technologies such as 4G and 5G, and deliver better voice services and mobile internet connection.
Although this technological advance is scheduled to begin in the second half of 2024, it will be a progressive process and will only be applied in those areas that also have more modern mobile technologies. For the time being, there are about 100 locations that only have 2G technology, where the switch-off will not take place until a higher mobile technology is available.
It was also reported that the technology and telecommunications company stopped marketing new services on 2G technology in August.
Sustainable growth
Renewing the technological infrastructure is essential to comply with the Chile 2035 Digital Strategy and achieve our country’s target of Carbon Neutrality by 2050. The 2G switch-off is also environmentally sustainable since older technologies are less efficient due to their high energy consumption. In this sense, the upgrade of networks will be an important contribution to the reduction of the carbon footprint.
In turn, the old handsets and mobile devices that are exchanged will be part of Entel’s recycling programs. To do so, they must be deposited in the company’s mailboxes set up for this purpose in the municipality or in the nearest Entel store.
More relevant information about the switch-off of 2G technology is available at entel.cl/2g. Telephone attention can also be obtained by dialing 103 from an Entel cellular phone or 600 3600 103.
