The consolidation of the operation in Peru and the deployment of mobile and fixed fiber optic network infrastructure are among the priorities of the investment plan announced this morning by Entel for 2020.
According to the company’s president, Juan Hurtado, “in 2020 Entel will invest $ 371,000 million, of which $ 264,000 million will be destined to the operation in Chile and $ 105,000 million to Peru, a plan that we will permanently evaluate according to the new requirements that this sanitary emergency will impose on us”. In addition, Ch$ 2,000 million will be invested in the Call Center operation in both countries.
He detailed that, of this amount, more than $ 100,000 million will be allocated to the mobile business in Chile, “where we will increase the capacity and coverage of our 4G network to continue to accompany the large growth in the volume of data consumed by our customers. We are also planning an initial deployment of the 5G network towards the end of this year, depending on when the public bidding process is completed”.
Of the investment in Peru, $70 billion will be allocated to increasing 4G coverage and data capacity and $8 billion to fixed services for corporate customers, Hurtado informed.
As for the Home business, the investment in 2020 will be more than $ 67 billion in Chile, mainly in the deployment of fiber optics. “This is very important, considering that 5G technology will require a very demanding network topology for data transmission, regarding providing higher speeds and very low latency, so sites must be connected with fiber”, he explained.
On the other hand, almost $ 50,000 million will be allocated in Chile to connectivity businesses for companies, customer projects, IT and digital businesses (cloud, IOT, cybersecurity and Big Data).
In the above figures, the investment in the digital transformation project is contained, where it will continue to advance and deepen transversely in the company, with an investment in the year around $ 48,000 million for both countries.
“We have good prospects, with clear business strategies that are bearing fruit, and we are making the investments and internal transformations that allow us to successfully face an increasingly dynamic and competitive market scenario, with very demanding customers who will be increasingly digital”, said Juan Hurtado.
Covid-19
Regarding the health emergency facing the country and the scenario it poses for Entel’s operations, the company’s CEO, Antonio Büchi, pointed out that “this is a business that is very resilient to crises, as people’s need for our services is great in situations like this. This makes it very resilient to complex scenarios such as this one, even more so with all the connectivity needs that now arise in society as a whole”.
“Telecommunications companies, and Entel in particular, have proven to be vital for the functioning of the country and we have lived up to that need. This scenario calls us more than ever to connect with our purpose, because without technology, today our health system would not be functioning, nor could we be working, studying or informing ourselves as we are. We are doing everything we can to ensure normal operations, as well as taking concrete actions to help us all get through this complex situation as smoothly as possible", he said.
Among the measures implemented by Entel to support customers are the release of social networks, the increase in gigabytes for all customers with a plan, the provision of virtual meeting platforms for corporate customers and the adhesion to the “Connectivity Solidarity Plan” implemented together with the government and Atelmo for 40% of the most vulnerable households in the country.
Project in Peru
Regarding the operation in Peru, the company’s CEO highlighted that the 6% growth in the customer base in 2019 allowed Entel Peru to continue driving the company’s consolidated results and to continue to make sustainable progress in its objective of consolidating itself as a relevant player in that market. An important part of this growth was due to the strong 16% increase in the postpaid customer base, with 431,000 net additions in the year. It is worth noting that in the year, it was the company that led the net subscriber-to-subscriber portions, with a total of 195,000.
According to the executive, since they entered this market, their mobile network has grown significantly, and they are a leading operator in 4G service coverage. What is certain is that in just over five years, since the brand was launched at the end of 2014, Entel climbed to a market revenue share of almost 25%, and they expect to reach 30% or more.
“Peru continues to be the market where we see the greatest potential for growth, with a telecommunications industry that offers us attractive opportunities, such as the postpaid personal world, as well as the prepaid world and the micro and small companies that are emerging in the country”, he pointed out.
Operation in Chile
Antonio Büchi emphasized that in 2019, despite the highly competitive environment, “we maintained our leadership in the local mobile market in Chile, with more than nine million customers. In postpaid customers, we grew by 512,000 customers (+13%), with 50,784 net portabilities from subscription to subscription, leading the segment with a 33% market share”.
He also emphasized that this result “is accompanied by high customer satisfaction and brand preference. In fact, we lead in the 3G+4G customer segment, with a 32.1% share; as well as in the 4G customer segment, with a 31.5% share.”
“This is a sign of the importance that our services have in people’s daily lives, but also accounts for the browsing experience that Entel can offer its customers, by having a modern and robust 4G+ network deployed throughout the country, which has allowed us to deepen the data offer”, he stressed.
Regarding the residential segment, the Entel Hogar customer base amounted to 511,000 services, with an increase of 13% regarding 2018, which was mainly driven by broadband internet services.
Regarding Entel’s strategic plan for this year, Büchi assured that they remain focused on consolidating as a relevant player in Peru; boosting the offer of fixed services to the home, either with a high-speed wireless offer or over fiber optics; and fixed services, IT and digital services for companies and corporations. “And we have grown consistently in all these segments”, emphasized the company’s CEO.
Meanwhile, in the rest of the businesses in which Entel faces more mature industries, such as mobile, the strategy aims to sustain its leadership.
