• Entel, together with Fundación País Digital, today inaugurated the “Yo Leo” (in English “I Read”) project, an initiative that seeks to promote reading in Spanish and Rapa Nui for children from first to third grade on the island.

• The project includes the delivery of 120 tablets loaded with digital content in three of the four schools on the island. The scope of the project will benefit more than 600 students.

Facilitating the learning of reading in children through teacher support and the use of digital media, is the objective of the project “Yo Leo”, an initiative that seeks to improve reading in Spanish and Rapa Nui in children between 1st and 3rd grade of Easter Island schools.

The program included the delivery of 120 tablets in the schools Lorenzo Baeza, Brother Eugenio Eyraud and San Sebastian de Akivi, loaded with two applications to support the children’s reading learning through stories and complementary activities, in line with the expected learning for each level, thus promoting reading comprehension strategies and the enjoyment of reading.

The tablets have a heritage rescue tool, as the devices are loaded with a Rapa Nui dictionary, which seeks to promote the preservation of the language. It also has an integrated learning system called “La Verdad Sobre las Sirenas” (in English “The Truth About Mermaids”), developed by Pehuén Digital.

Similarly, the tablets can be used by the other children in the schools, thus taking advantage of the technological potential of these tools, which will eventually allow close to 600 children to benefit from this initiative.

“For Entel it is essential to connect people and communities with the technological changes taking place. This project allows us to bring people together, especially children, around technology, as well as using it as an educational tool to reduce the digital divide" , said Manuel Araya, Entel’s manager of regulation and corporate affairs.

Thirty teachers from the island received comprehensive training on the implementation of these technological resources in the classroom, as well as pedagogical guidelines on how to work with them so that learning can be meaningful.

“To be able to meet the needs of our communities based on our motivations and our message of digital culture is something that as a Foundation makes us proud. Digital media not only foster curiosity in children, but also their motivation for learning, and in the case of Rapa Nui, for culture and reading. We are confident that we will serve the island, and ultimately the country, by generating content and data to contribute to public policy,” , said Juan Luis Núñez, CEO of País Digital.
