Promoting reading in Spanish and Aymara in children between first and third grade in the Tarapacá Region, through the use of digital tools, is the goal of the “Yo Leo” program, which was launched today by Entel and Fundación País Digital.
This project includes the delivery of 100 tablets, loaded with various content and applications in Aymara and Spanish, in seven schools in the region. In the municipality of Huara, the beneficiary schools are Soga, Onzana, Chusmiza and Huara High School. Meanwhile, in the municipality of Camiña, the schools where this program will be implemented are the schools of Cuizama and Camiña, while in Iquique it will be the España school.
The tablets have an interactive digital tool for heritage rescue, through which you can read stories and develop pedagogical activities that support reading comprehension of the Aymara language. This application was created based on the book “La Música de las Montañas” (The Music of the Mountains), published by Amanuta.
In addition, several complementary activities will be carried out in the schools, in line with the expected learning for each level, thus promoting reading comprehension strategies and the enjoyment of reading.
The tablets can also be used by other students in the schools, which will allow more than 800 children to benefit from this initiative.
“For Entel it is essential to connect people with their culture and the technological changes that are taking place. This project allows us to do both, since technology will be an educational tool to reduce the digital divide and preserve the Aymara language”, said Patricia Muñoz, Entel’s Director of Sustainability and Communities.
In addition, 30 teachers from the benefited municipalities received a complete training for the implementation of these technological resources in the classroom, as well as pedagogical guidelines to work with them.
“Using digital media to reinforce reading in children not only encourages curiosity to learn more, but also generates greater motivation and creativity. As a foundation we are proud to participate in a project that will be a contribution to the country and that places special emphasis on the teaching of native languages, thus rescuing our origins. By doing this, we also contribute to the generation of data and content that can represent a contribution to the implementation of public policies in education” , said Juan Luis Núñez, General Manager of País Digital.
