Six months after launch:

With 83% of the project deployed, the company is already operating in 222 communes throughout the country.

The speed at which this technology has been adopted has been significantly higher than in the case of 3G and 4G.

Six months after officially launching its fifth generation network, Entel has already made 83% progress in the deployment nationwide and is operating it commercially in all regions of the country.

Specifically, according to the company, its service is already deployed in 222 communes of the country, between the Region of Arica and Parinacota, in the north, and the Region of Magallanes, in the extreme south of the country, where Entel customers who have compatible terminals enabled to use this new technology can access its multiple benefits in those areas where it already has coverage. Specifically, in the Metropolitan Region, the deployment of the project has already reached 95%.

“Our commitment has always been to bring 5G to as many Chileans as possible, in the shortest possible time, and this is a significant step towards this goal. In fact, the speed of deployment of this technology has been significantly faster than in previous experiences. In any case, the consolidation of 5G will be seen gradually, to the extent that the network currently being deployed is consolidated", said Manuel Araya, Entel’s Manager of Regulation and Corporate Affairs. He also assured that it will not only allow a substantial increase in the speed of navigation, but will also make it possible to expand the mobile networks to support a large number of devices and services, connecting new industries, with better performance, efficiency and costs.

In fact, as Entel has demonstrated in the 11 experimental demonstrations it has conducted since 2018 with this new technology, 5G has the potential to significantly impact important sectors of society, such as health and education, in addition to mining, forestry, airports, road management, and security and emergency management, to name a few. How? through unthinkable advances in technologies such as virtual and immersive reality, robotics and Artificial Intelligence, in addition to boosting the IoT, with thousands of connected devices thanks to the higher speed, lower latency and data transmission capacity that this new technology will enable.

Entel also reported that interest in living the 5G experience is very high, which explains why around 50% of the smartphones they currently sell are compatible with this new technology. This means that there are already more than 600 thousand Entel customers who can access this service in the communes that already have authorization from Subtel to operate commercially with 5G, and that more than 460 thousand people have already connected to this fifth generation network.

“Entel has always worked to lead the deployment of new networks and technologies nationwide. A clear example was the deployment of our 4G+ network, which quickly became the most robust and modern in the country, and in which we continue to invest to expand its coverage and capacity, with a focus on regions and rural areas. And 5G will be no exception. We want as many people as possible to have access to this technology, which can make a significant contribution to various areas of society", said Manuel Araya.

Some of the communes in which the company is already commercially offering its service are Renca, which was one of the first in the Metropolitan Region, Copiapó, Alto Hospicio, Illapel, San Fernando, Talca, Hualpén, Angol, Temuco and Puerto Williams, to name a few.

Accelerated adoption

According to the GSMA’s The Mobile Economy 2022 report, 5G adoption continues to grow rapidly in those markets that have pioneered its implementation, driven by the economic recovery that followed the height of the pandemic, increased 5G handset sales, and advances in coverage and mobile operator efforts. Their estimates are that, by the end of 2025, 5G will account for around 25% of total mobile connections and more than two out of every five people around the world will have access to a 5G network.

In the case of Entel, six months after the commercial launch of its fifth generation network, these connections already represent around 5.8% of its customers’ mobile connections, with around 462,559 users connected to the 5G network in May. Thus, when compared to the adoption of previous technologies, this growth is much more accelerated. “For example, in the first technological changeover in 2006, from 2G to 3G, it took more than 3.5 years (45 months) for there to be 460 thousand Entel customers connected. In the case of 4G, launched in 2014, reaching that same figure required approximately 1 year. And with 5G it was achieved in less than six months”, Araya detailed.
