It will initially invest more than US$ 230 million over three years:

The technology and telecommunications company announced the details of the development of its fifth generation network, which in this first launch will deploy services in 33 communes of the Metropolitan Region and some communes in the regions.

It is expected that 5G, as an enabling technology, will bring unimagined advances in areas as diverse as industry, health, transportation and education, directly impacting people’s quality of life.

The wait is over. Less than a year after having been awarded the spectrum required for the development of 5G in the country, Entel officially began operating the first stage of its fifth generation network. With this, all its prepaid and postpaid customers who have 5G enabled terminals (currently totaling about 47,500), will be able to access this technology in those places where this network is initially deployed and whose coverage will gradually grow over the next few years.

According to the company, thanks to the progress made and after receiving the respective authorizations from the Undersecretary of Telecommunications, with this launch they are already able to deliver 5G services in important areas of the Metropolitan Region and are moving forward in the deployment in different regions.

As of today, residents of 33 communes in the Metropolitan Region, such as Renca, La Pintana, Providencia and Santiago, as well as some communes in the regions, will have 5G in their lives through Entel’s network. Currently, there are already models of smartphones of different brands compatible with this technology and at various prices.

“5G is key for us and we want as many people as possible to have access to this technology, but it is important to note that the network deployment and the availability of terminals will be gradual, and its development throughout the country will take time. Our commitment at Entel is to bring the benefits of this technology to everyone in the country", commented Entel’s CEO, Antonio Büchi.

Investment

During the last few years, Entel has been preparing for the arrival of 5G, making important investments in improvements to the 4G network and in the deployment of optical fiber, both necessary infrastructures for the deployment of the fifth generation network.

It is also projected that once the deployment of this network is completed in 2023, Entel will have illuminated various facilities that play important roles for society, such as 199 hospitals, 24 ministries, 16 municipalities, 15 airports or airfields, 19 ports, seven centers of scientific interest and 25 universities or institutions of higher education.

Along these lines, and in order to respond to the important telecommunications infrastructure requirements demanded by 5G, the company announced an estimated initial investment of US $230 million over three years. In fact, this year alone it plans to deploy more than 400 antennas, increasing in coverage during 2022 and 2023. This will allow coverage of more than 313 communes, advancing 5G connectivity in all 16 regions of Chile.

“As it consolidates, 5G will bring unthinkable advances in areas as diverse as industry, health, transportation and education, directly impacting the quality of life of people and the development of our country”, added Entel’s CEO.
