As part of the project “Reciclaje electrónico para Chile” (in English, “Electronic Recycling for Chile”), Entel and the Recyclápolis Foundation will distribute 25 bins -of 360 liters each- at various points in the region.

The containers will be used for recycling technological waste, such as cell phones, accessories, printer ink cartridges and compact discs.

Incentivizing recycling practices is what Recyclápolis Foundation and Entel are seeking, which today kicked off the “Reciclaje electrónico para Chile” campaign in the Tarapacá Region.

The purpose of this initiative is to promote electronic recycling practices through the deployment of 25 containers, each with a capacity of 360 liters, which will be distributed at various points such as schools, health centers and iconic places in Iquique.

“For Entel, the development of people and the environment go hand in hand. Therefore, our responsibility must go beyond our operations, as we are committed to connecting people with a cleaner and better world, so that the next generations will have a more sustainable future”, explained Patricia Muñoz, Entel’s Sustainability Director.

The containers will be used to collect electronic waste in the following categories: cell phones and accessories (cables, chargers, headphones, etc.), ink cartridges for printers and compact discs.

“As Municipality of Iquique we are very pleased to be part of this project in which we will incorporate students from our schools and other educational institutions because we believe that starting with them, we must begin to generate a culture of recycling and environmental protection to ensure a more sustainable future for our society,”, said the mayor of Iquique, Mauricio Soria Macchiavello.

Fernando Nilo, founder of the Recyclápolis Foundation, commented: “Today we begin the eighth stage of our Reciclaje Electrónico para Chile campaign, here in Iquique. From now on our Norte Grande is more sustainable than yesterday thanks to this initiative, launched by our foundation Recyclápolis, together with our strategic ally Entel. I invite you to continue working towards the sustainable Chile that we all long for”.

Thanks to this initiative, which has been very successful so far in the Metropolitan, Valparaíso, Biobío, Araucanía, Coquimbo and Los Ríos regions, more than 11 tons of electronic waste have been collected. Of these, 8.3 tons correspond to batteries, 2.7 tons to cartridges and CDs, and the rest to cell phones and accessories.

In addition to Tarapacá, during 2017 this campaign will be replicated in other regions of the country, with the intention of ending the year with the deployment of electronic recycling containers throughout Chile.

Recyclápolis will be in charge of removing the electronic waste collected in the containers and its proper disposal or recycling, as appropriate.
