According to new Entel analysis:

In the ranking, the apps that trafficked the greatest amount of data were YouTube, Facebook and Instagram.

The Metropolitan Region grew 62% in Streaming usage, from 160,462,974 GB -in 2020- to 260,618,521 GB last year.

The health contingency accelerated the digitization and use of the Internet, which had already been growing strongly in recent years, and has significantly influenced the use of the network by Chileans, who have taken many of their daily activities to the digital environment. To understand the scope of this phenomenon, Entel -a technology and telecommunications company- has conducted a series of analyses on how much the consumption of mobile and fixed data has increased, but also how habits have been changing according to the applications used.

Its latest report showed that the categories of applications that grew the most in 2021 -compared to 2020- were Delivery (up 245%) and Social Networks (up 192%); in third place were Transportation apps, which grew 80%.

“This analysis yields extremely interesting conclusions, as it reveals how user behavior has changed, especially when we consider that the last two years have been marked by the pandemic and the need to do almost everything from home, virtually. This explains the explosive increase in the use of home delivery apps, which has continued to grow despite the end of quarantines”, says Entel’s director of regulatory studies and reports, Fredy Saavedra.

The top ten apps that grew the most are as follows:

  1. Hangouts Meet 637%
  2. TikTok 628%
  3. Disney 420%
  4. Rappi 342%
  5. Clash Royale 327%
  6. Telegram 293%
  7. SnapChat 189%
  8. YouTube Music 154%
  9. Valve Steam 131%
  10. Uber 84%

Regarding data consumption by applications, the balance showed that, nationally, the application with the highest traffic was YouTube with 285,574 terabytes (TB), displacing Facebook to second place, the app with the highest data consumption in 2020, with 194,282 TB. Third place went to Instagram, another Target app, with 186,248 TB.

“All these apps grew mainly due to data consumption for streaming, which has increased explosively by Chileans, in line with a global trend”, detailed Saavedra. In fact, at a national level, the use of data for streaming grew 81%, from 448,166,804 GB in 2020 to 810,698,155 GB in 2021.

It is also relevant to highlight that in seven regions of the country, traffic grew more than 100% for these services. The regions that grew the most in this category were Arica and Parinacota, and Tarapacá, both with 131%, followed by the Magallanes and Antarctica Region (117%) and the Atacama Region (115%). In the case of the Metropolitan Region, Entel’s analysis shows a 62% increase in streaming usage, from 160,462,974 GB in 2020 to 260,618,521 GB in 2021.

Cybersecurity recommendations

In view of the constant increase in mobile connectivity and the massification of the use of applications, Entel has made available to people relevant information on cybersecurity and personal data protection through the website entel.cl/ciudadano-digital.
