Last year was marked by the Covid-19 pandemic, which forced to continue with quarantine measures during the first half of the year, while during the second half of the year people resumed their activities with fewer restrictions. However, the use of mobile devices for entertainment, work or remote education remained as a trend, contributing to the fact that mobile data traffic continues to increase in the national territory, reporting an annual growth of 34% in 2021 compared to the previous year.
The study prepared by the technology and telecommunications company Entel shows a sustained increase in all regions of the country. Regarding the Metropolitan region, mobile data traffic grew by 23%, from 315,265,541 gigabytes (GB) trafficked in 2020 to 388,669,826 GB last year.
Among the regions with the highest annual growth, Arica and Parinacota stand out with an 85% evolution; Tarapacá, which increased its data usage by 60%, and Los Ríos, with a 50% increase. Thus, if 996,205,229 GB of data were used nationally in 2020, in 2021 the total sum rose to 1,332,398,841 GB.
“2021 was a very important year for Entel because we managed to increase and strengthen the 4G infrastructure throughout the national territory and we ended the cycle by activating the first stage of our 5G network in various regions of the country. This has allowed us to deliver better connectivity to our customers, which is reflected in an increase in data usage that remains above average regarding the pre-pandemic period", said Pedro Suárez, Entel’s Regulation Manager.
On December 19, 2021, the second round of the presidential elections was held, the day on which the most people voted, achieving a record level of citizen participation. This day was also the one that registered the highest data traffic during the past, reaching 4,272,362 GB.
The company, which has the most robust and modern 4G network in the country, has doubled the number of stations in the last 4 years nationwide, providing services to more than 6.5 million users and during the last year invested US$ 60 million nationwide to improve the coverage and capacity of its 4G network.
The day on which the highest data traffic was recorded during 2021 was December 19, reaching 4,272,362 GB of use, the same day on which the second round of the presidential elections took place. On the other hand, October 4 was the day with the highest voice traffic, with 132,360,571 spoken minutes, which coincides with the time when WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram applications stopped working for several hours, evidencing the great use that users make of these networks, especially the messaging service, which has become a fundamental tool for work and planning.
Nationally, the use of data for streaming increased by 81%, from 448,166,804 GB in 2020 to 810,698,155 GB in 2021. While in seven regions of the country traffic grew by more than 100% for these services, in the Metropolitan Region the growth reached 62%.
Regarding the use of applications, the balance shows that at a national level, the application with the highest traffic was YouTube with 285,574 terabytes, displacing Facebook, the app with the highest traffic in 2020. Meanwhile, the apps that grew the most in mobile traffic over the past year were Hangouts, with 637%, TikTok and Disney, with 628% and 420% increases, respectively.
Finally, the technology and communications company reminds that every time a mobile device requests internet access and is not connected to a WiFi network, it will require the use of mobile data to browse, download or exchange information.
