This January 28 commemorates the signing of the Council of Europe Convention for the Protection of Individuals with Regard to Automatic Processing of Personal Data, a celebration that the technology and telecommunications company Entel joins to continue educating and raising awareness about the importance of data protection.
Regarding this last point, with the proliferation of connected devices, cybersecurity and personal data protection become of fundamental importance. Thus, increasing cybersecurity and protecting data will be part of a permanent self-care on the part of users, as well as the responsibility of educating and ensuring its protection on the side of companies.
Fernanda Mattar, Entel’s Deputy Manager of Security Engineering, explains that “the great challenges in 5G cybersecurity demand a review of the current framework of policies applicable to the digital ecosystem, which requires all the actors involved to be informed about its characteristics, from manufacturers and regulators to the user who finally uses the cell phone or device and allows and gives access, often unknowingly, to crimes”.
Along these lines, there are a series of recommendations that users can follow when safeguarding their personal data on the network.

Commitment to data protection
The challenge of strengthening cybersecurity and data protection is transversal, meaning that companies must also periodically review and update their policies and protocols. In this line, Entel complies with current regulations on data protection and also takes as a reference the best practices of the General Data Protection Regulation of the European Union, as well as the drafts of the law being discussed in the Chilean Congress on data protection, in addition to the internal recommendations of various areas, including the management of analytics, specifically for this issue.
In terms of data privacy, 5G does not represent different risks than previous technologies, however, it is expected to increase to the extent that there will be much more connected devices, so more agents will be able to participate in the processing of personal data and geolocation based on this network is much more precise.
It is important that the data used with the new applications and services based on 5G are transparent and with the consent of the data owners, the roles and responsibilities regarding the personal data of the different agents participating in the network must be clearly defined, and measures must be implemented to minimize the use of geolocation data, among others.
“From Entel, there has always been a strong commitment to the protection of personal data of our customers, we are responsible for integrating security in the entire value chain, not to allow the vulnerability of both connected devices, data transmission, information collected, storage and processing of data, so we are constantly adapting our policies in this area and constantly review internal processes, projects and developments, with a multidisciplinary team”, adds Fernanda Mattar.
In this way, the company annually reinforces its commitment to safeguarding the personal data of individuals, companies, suppliers and employees, making transversal efforts in its areas to achieve continuous improvement and updating. In addition, the company has resources to inform, educate and support its customers and the entire digital community.
